Hey guys. I think I've finally come to the conclusion that I want an xbox 360. I had been debating for a while, since I'm only interested in about 4 games, but I think I am going to buy one.

I have a couple questions though.

1. Everyone I know that has bought an xbox has had it break. That's not something I look forward to having to deal with. I know they give you a new one and all that jazz, but when I drop 400 bucks on a console, I want it to work. Are the xbox's still unreliable and breaking?

2. The ring of death thing- How exactly does it happen? I don't know the particulars, but I don't like the idea of my game getting completely ruined when my xbox is accidently hit or something.

Thanks for the help.

The 360 doesn't break easily. People that recieve that ring of deathare to blame themselves. Inorder to get the ring of death your xbox 360 needs to overheat. So, play more than 3 hours a day and you'll get it.

The New 360's being shipped run cooler. Much much more reliable. Cooler chip.

The RROD doesnt ruin your games, its basically when the 360's cooling system fails.

It will happen to everyone who has bought a 360 before september.

Its all a matter of time, if you play your 360 a lot, it will happen within 10 months usually.

The 360's are much more reliable now.

Youve gotta think about it this way...is it likely the people getting the RRoD are having ventilation issues with thier 360. When you get it make sure it has PLENTY of ventilation, this doesnt mean just putting a fan infront of it because all that does is circulate the air, if it is already warm a fan wont help....you need to allow fresh air to get to the 360 so put it somehwhere with a decent cearance on all sides of the unit.

Secondly ive noticed alot of people i know who have the RRoD dont have a very big room to play it in, and also they have usually a pc and perhaps other heat producing things in there, if your ambient temeprature in your room is above normal then thats not going to be good for it.

Sure the new 360s coming out (and the elite) have the improved cooling system but it really shouldnt come to that if you be sensible about where you place it and how warm you keep your room!?

Not the case...And it's total crap to have to limit your playtime to 3 hours a day. Sure you can get your xbox to overheat if you don't take care of it, but some people have their boxes RROD on them in the ideal situation.

Mega_Mustaine

1. yes.

2. the RRoD is caused by many things. one of the greatest contributors and something that hasnt been addressed is the GPU.

they put a grease to help take the heat from the chip and put it in the heat sync (the heat sync is then cooled by the air going through the system and this cycle repeats). well sometimes the grease dries up and is no longer helping the heat leave the GPU to the heat sync. so the GPU gets extremly hot. MS chose the cheap way out and used some sort of wax to keep the gpu from falling out of the socket. well when the chip gets too hot, that wax thing melts and the chip moves. some people also claim the soder melts and thats moves the GPU. end result, gpu gets too hot to the point stuff melts.

...and to add to that ive taken two 360s apart and replaced the thermal pads with gelatinous thermal compound (something like artic silver would do the trick) and in the lab we noticed the heatsinks were much hotter (hence they were doing a better job) so the luck of the draw might also be a factor if the heatsinks (and the cooling compound) werent installed particularly well.

Imo if you let something such as failure rates affect what gaming system you are considering buying your missing the big picture, if you buy an xbox360 it should be because of its great gaming catalogue, multiplayerand its fair pricing.

Not its technical hiccups, besides they have increased the warranty to 3 years now so dont worry you get a new one if it does brick.

your right, technical hiccups are reasons to not get a console. i dont care if they gave me a 10 year warrenty. i shouldnt have to need an extended warrenty because the hardware does poorly.

Don't worry about it overheating, I got mine launch day almost 2 years ago and I have never had a single problem and I play it quite a bit. I am sure I have played it more then 3 hours a day quite a bit. Just my 2 cents. Oh and you are making the right decision on a 360, I have a wii too and I play my 360 about 10 times more.

Like what others have been saying, get the 2 year warranty at Best Buy and your set. The premium is $350 now so you are just going to be paying the $400 for a system and a warranty now.

you dont find it kinda sad its almost necessary to spend extra money on a warrenty?

what a sad age this is going to be...massive failure is acceptable because you had the option to buy warrenties.

so then your also suggesting the ps3?

and i truely belive people should be more concerned with failure rates. its not alright for the number of 360s that are getting the RRoD to do so.

To play it safe just don't play for hours and hours straight. Play for two or three hours take a hour or two break and then you won't have to worry about overheating. My 360 has never crapped out on me but the people who have gotten the rings of death were people who will play like 8 to 10 hours straight on any given weekend.

i prefer no extra money and having piece of mind. i bought a one year one from gamestop, that 360 broke. so i had to use my thing up right after the 1 month period that i could have done the normal gamestop return(launch by the way). that one worked for a little over a year...then it started to scratch disks. i called MS they told me too bad, and to stop moving my console (which i did not do). so i chunked it and got an elite, that one was broken as well (wouldnt read disks) i just didnt have any 360 games untill once again the 1 month thing was over. and i once again had to use my warrenty up. im now left with a elite that seems to be working....but im not going to spend anymore money on it.

giving MS the excuses that we have warrenties to sell us such **** hardware is horrable. as a consumer this is unacceptable.

I have to be honest here, while I have never got the red ring of death I have had other problems with my 360. My 360 lays horizontal yet on new games after several hours of playing it weird lines and blemishes are present on the disk. In Forza 2 on certain tracks the textures start to go away during the race and moments later my 360 crashes. With Halo 3 when the disk is in my 360 it will lock up if I go tomy friends list. My most recent problem occurred in PGR4, like Forza 2 on a certain track all the textures started to go away and my 360 crashed.

I'm the opposite I play my Wii fairly often. With games like Zelda TP, Super Paper Mario, RE4, and MP3 I don't understand how people let there Wii's sit.

I think its because that with the exception of the games you listed (most of which I've already played) the Wii's fairly linear and shallow gameplay gets old, quick.
