You can play on an HD tv with just the standard cables. Though you would want to play on an HD TV using the HDMI port. For this you will need an HDMI cable and the difference is....let's just say it is visible and better.

Use HDMI. Or if you can't use HDMI, use the component HD cables. Yes it makes a huge difference. Not only in the quality and sharpness of the picture, but also the aspect ratio for most games. Like movies set for widescreen or full screen. If you're playing standard def, you're missing out on all the stuff on the left and right sides of the screen. Some games will keep the 16:9 ratio even if you're still playing on a Standard TV, but not all. If you're jumping to HD for the first time, it will be a jarring difference when you realize how much more of the screen you've been missing.

Difference is night n day.

IF you have both consoles, the one you use the most should have the HDMI cable the other can get by (and still look awesome) on a Component cable(red/blue/green...)NOT Composite (red/white and yellow).

IF your HDTV has more than 1 connection for HDMI then get those. They don't cost much at all and you don't need something fancy.

HDMI is better than component HD. I'm talking component HD which has the red, green and blue cables. But I don't think it's a huge difference. Nothing that will jump out at you. If you don't have component HD already included with your Xbox, you'll have to find one. Not sure how easy it is to find them. It has to be the Xbox specific component HD cables. Probably can find them easy enough at a Best Buy. But for what you'd end up paying you might as well get a decent HDMI cable. You can use any HDMI cable. You don't have to get the one from Microsoft.

HDMI will by far give you the best picture. Go to Monoprice or Amazon for your cable though, no need to spend more than $10 on an HDMI cable.

The HD TV already comes with HDMI ports...All you need is an HDMI cable which you will hook from your XBOX 360 to the TV....That's all to it...Well, you have to play with the XBOX 360's DISPLAY settings to get it where you want it to be (Screen Size, Resolution, all that good stuff)...

and to answer this question, in most cases it will actually look worse. You need HD cables or it is pointless getting and HDTV

You don't need any extra cables.

Generally speaking HDMI is best, then VGA, then component.

HDMI and VGA have virtually the same picture quality but VGA has no sound. Component comes in at a close second.

I personally can't tell the difference between any of them. My picture looks freaking awesome no matter which cable i use (i have all three) :)

As for graphics difference, it isn't huge unless you are playing a native 1080p game.

The xbox will give better results on a 1080p than a ps3 because nearly all xbox games are developed in knowledge that most people will be using 1080p and developers ensure that games upscale properly to 1080p as best as possible through the xbox's dedicated upscaling hardware.

Alot of ps3 games are designed to be upscaled and displayed at 720p. In some scenarios, the ps3 can upscale to 720p through the game software, then when you select 1080p on your ps3 firmware, it will upscale again. OR you can send a 720p signal to a 1080p and the TV will upscale. What you have is a game that has been designed to upscaleto 720p being upscaled to 1080p and the picture can actually look WORSE.

This is known as double scaling errors, and if you are really unlucky with your ps3/tv combination you will also get huge input lag. (double scaling can drastically increase input lag).

I would try and test the TV with the PS3 before you buy it to make sure it is ok, but the 360 will be fine.

To clarify this point for the OP since the question is not very specific, here are the different kinds of cables available:

RCA Cables - Yellow/Red/White - Lowest quality. Standard Def only. You can use these on an HDTV but you can't use them for an HD signal, only SD. Stereo sound only (no true surround).

S-Video - Used instead of the Yellow (video) part of the RCA cables. Slightly better quality, but still only SD. Video only, sound has to be carried over the white/red of RCA or another type of cable.

If you have an HDTV, you don't want to use either of the above cable types or you'll be using your HDTV like and SDTV. Most types of HDTVs don't do standard def that well so the picture will generally look worse than it would have on your SDTV.

Component Cables - Red/Green/Blue - Analog cables capable of carrying up to a 1080p - Video only, sound has to be carried over another cable

VGA cable - 15 pin connector - Xbox 360 only (there are no first party VGA cables for the PS3) - better than component, not as good as HDMI - Video only

DVI - Large connector with many pins and a weird little fin inside - Same signal type as HDMI but with no audio. You can buy DVI to HDMI and visa versa cables. Best quality (same as HDMI)

HDMI - Smaller connector than DVI - Same signal type (digital 1080p) - Carries high quality audio - absolute best option.

Whether or not you see a diff between Component and HDMI will vary based on viewing distance, tv size, quality of component cables, etc. Both are very good, but up close you can notice some "noise" in the picture on most component set ups. At a comfortable viewing distance this usually isn't an issue.
