So instead of sending it away to MS to be repaired, can i just take it back to the shop (in this case Gamestation) and recieve a new one?

doubt it unless you bought an extra warrenty from the place you got it, If you fill out a repair report online and ship it right away your xbox will only be goone for like 10 days and they will fix it and ship it free as long as you got it in the last 3 years

No, unfortunely.
When my Xbox broke I attempted to return it to PC World, where I'd bought it.

They said something along the lines of "Microsoft have made it so the consoles have to be returned directly to them."
Something along those lines..
In short. They basically told me the warranty with them doesn't count. Microsoft want all broken consoles to be sent off to them.

Sorry buddy.
I tried the same thing.. i didn't really wanna send it off myself.
Eventually I did and it was back in a week.

Gamestop will only replace an "E74" Xbox, if you have the warrenty or you bought it within the last 30 days of this occuring. damned it ya do, damned if ya don't.
