If you install a game on your hardrive and the disk breaks can you still play it

My modern warfare 2 just broke (disc unreadable my xbox scratched it) and I was wondering if I had installed the game on my hardrive prior to it breaking would i still be able to play it?

secondly can I get a friends modern warfare and install it on my hardrive and just play that??

I've never installed a game onto my hardrive before so any help (such as a basic run down) would be greatly appreciated.
