I would just buy a little end table, put it on that, buy a little fan that clips on to the end table and make it facing the 360.
There are alot of cases of 360's breaking with good ventilation and cooling, though.
1. play it about 3hrs and give it a break, you can always go back to it later
2. keep the console horizontal on a flat solid surface around a well ventilated open area
3. make sure to keep the power brick off carpeting and onto a hard solid surface (also keep all 4 sides ventilated)
4. clean it occasionally with a can of compressed air to get rid of some dust that may be inside (some people have used a vacume cleaner to suck some dust out of it)
5. and lastly plug in the 360 directly into the wall, do not use the intercooler as well
Disregard what spykezilla says about being high off the ground, just make sure it isn't laying on the ground. Make sure there is good ventilation around the system and power brick. Plug it directly into the wall, not into a power strip and don't use the nyko intercooler.shadow8585
That's how mine broke. I just said relatively high off the ground, not on the ceiling....:|
I had the same thoughts as you when I was going to buy my Xbox 360. Basically this is what I do.
Don't place it on any type of carpet. have it on a small table, just keep it away from the floor. I have mines on a wooden desk. I have my TV on the right and my Xbox 360 on the left. There is plenty of air from the front, back, and both sides. Also since my desk is wooden I took white tiles and placed them no my desk, than I placed my Xbox 360 onto it. The tiles are a lot colder than the wooden desk and it keeps it cool. I dust my Xbox 360 daily and I dust my whole room once a week. I always turn on my ceiling fan when I am going to play my Xbox 360 and I also have my Air Conditioner on as well. My Power Brick is on top of some stacked small tiles I have. It fits perfectly and it keeps it cool as well. I have my Power Brick plugged directly into the wall so I won't get loss of energy. Basically this is what I do to keep my xbox 360 safe. I have had it since April 24th, 2007. Not a long time but it's still going good and I have not experienced any "Red Lights of Death" or freezing. Also if you have a ceiling fan and you wish to turn it on when you play, make sure you clean it once a week because dust builds up on the blades. Just try hard to prevent dust from entering the Xbox 360, that is basically the reason of the "Red Lights of Death". It builds up it there and clogs all the circuits, chips, etc.
Does anyone know when the new 65nm chip versions are being released in Europe? I read that the fall is the expected release, butwon't thatprobably be only the States?
Honestly, the best thing you can do is buy the warranty. A year after I bought mine it broke. I shipped it out on a friday and got it back the following Thursday. It was very painless, and very fast.
If there is something wrong internally with your 360, putting it high or low, horizontal or vertical, or fan or no fan won't make a difference. I didn't touch my 360 and it broke, so it's not like I did something for it to die on me. It was just meant to break. Again, spend a little more and get a warranty. At least that way you know you'll have a working unit for a year (or whatever the warranty is now, I think 2 years).
Oh, and more thing, the warranty takes care of everything, you won't have to pay for anything after that. I hear all these horror stories about people having to pay $50 or whatever to ship it out. MS sent me a box with a pre-paid label. The only trouble I went through was packing it up (in packaging they gave me) and taking it to get shipped.
basically make sure that it stays cool. As long as the fan can function properly, you shouldnt have many other problems.
Lol I am guessing you that is one of your old Xbox 360s and you took it out and just took a lighter and lit that plug input until it started to be burnt and starte to smell.Kinky_Kost
I got the photo on the internet, and thats not on the 360, its on a intercooler. I'm guessing your around 12 years old? Or do you just not go to school and play GoW all day?

Your first post clearly states that in melts into your Xbox 360. And in the photo I see a burnt intercooler not a Xbox 360. So the intercooler is what got burnt and it didn't melt. And you notice me say something about the photo and you instantly presume I am 12 years old? Nice get yourself together Infamous, it's obvious you must not go to school. Also I don't even have Gears of War, not my type of game.
Yes, It does melt into the xbox 360 in some cases. I should one of the cases where it happend to burn the connectors on the 360, and in this picture it shows the intercooler. I was calling you a 12 year old because your grammar was reflecting to my little brother grammar. I do go to school, and Atm I do not have a 360, I'm just trying to help the crowd of people who are planning on buying one like myself.
edit: I never said It would break, there are just chances of it breaking if you don't treat it like a queen.
omfg. this is what happens when ppl start making all these "i've been through 8 360's 90% of all 360's break" posts. now everyone thinks that there brand new 360 is gonna break. believe me, the possibility of your 360 breaking is not high. just treat it well and you'll be fine. you should not be worried about this crapsens_rocks_40
I think your misinformed, i work at Best Buy, in the videogame department and you would not believe how many people get the ring of death only owning the system a week or so. I've had several people come back couple days later saying it already broke. Have one customer know him by name already and he's been through four systems, he bought the warranty through us so he's covered. I always recommend the warranty through us seeing as how MS takes long to repair a system and sometimes comes back unrepaired, from what i've heard from some people here. I took real good care of my system and out of nowhere the whole thing took a crap on me, disc tray went out, constant freezing, and the ring of death.
The first day my friend got his 360, he played it ALL night.
I told him its going to die if he keeps playing it so long, and he keeps it in a little cabinet with a cable box under it, which is hot as it is. I can't wait to say "I told you so." He's just one of those people who thinks it will never happen to him, he doesn't even have a clue about the 3 red lights of death, he thinks his 360 is bullet-proof, basically.
And I exactly get what you mean, kinky, Why would you buy another one or pay $140 if its out of warranty to repair it? Wait about 2-4 months, and there will be a very, very worthy competitor and people won't put up with microsofts's bull****
The wii is only fun with a bunch of people, or if your a little boy that gets entertained easily. Some will disagree, but I have one and thats basically my opinion on the wii. A waste of my $250. I play my ps2 way more then my wii, and wii is supposed to be a next gen console, For me, its a high-tech piece of garbage.
I would get an elite. It has significant revisions on the motherboard, which allows it to run cooler. It contains no capacitors and less transistors compared to the premium. This means that there are less things in the elite to produce heat. It also has epoxy under the GPU and CPU, which allows them to stay on the motherboard if it ever warped from high temperatures. Although it seems like a foolish way to prevent the CPU and the GPU from popping out of the motherboard, epoxy also helps the heatsinks to be more efficient to cool off the GPU and CPU especially if it is placed on the bottom of both chips. I would also get an antec notebook cooler because it has an aluminum surface that can absorb heat. Also I would buy a 4 inch fan that you can place behind the 360. One of those cheap 7 dollars fans you can buy from target. Make sure the fan blows air away from the 360 so that the hot air comes out of the console. You dont have much to worry about.jay_k3
Wow, I didn't know any of that....That is a couple more reasons to buy a elite, although they are sold out almost everywhere, even on the interent. Today they stopped selling them at eb, or maybe I just kept thinking I saw them.

Electronics are electronics, so you will always have to deal with a small risk.
I hope this will help put you at ease. I bought my 360 at launch, and play it a lot. Aside from some freezing issues its been perfect, and those were from BC games Halo 2 and Splinter Cell:CT. Besides I can count those on one hand. No biggie right.:)
Plus I played the Halo 3 beta after Bungie officially shut it down! The Xbox 360 was left on for 3 whole days strait after the beta ended! Many others did this as well, because we were all playing custom games, so fear not.:D
I even have my 360 placed inside an entertainment center, which is pretty much fully enclosed except from the front, and 2 tiny 2" inch holes in the back! The 360 didn't sweet one bit.
The 360 is a trooper man, and it's my favorite system ever, even when the biggest games have yet to launch!
Peace.

Yea, everyone says "the elite is a big waste: HDMI, 120 gb, black, thats all, no use in buying it" but they are wrong b/c it does have all those things stated b/c i have heard about it on diff threads.
also, is it okay to blow air into the side (the bottom when vertical) with a small fan to increase air flow? or is drawing hot heat away better?
I notice people keep mentioning that they plug it into a wall. I have always had my systems through a good APC surge protector (REGZA, PS2, PC, Monitor, SNES, NES, Saturn, Genesis, etc..), and I have never had a problem. I haven't picked up a 360 yet as I am waiting till the end of the year when I hope the elite will be much easier to find. Still, with all the horror stories I am hearing I think waiting is a better move. Especially, since GTA4 and Mass Effect (so far the only two games that I'm interested in so far) haven't come out yet.vicsrealms
no, i heard that u CAN plug it into a power strip of some sort, AS LONG as it is a good make (not like a dollar store/5 dollar cheap one). But i the good ones are OK (at least what i've heard from)

No matter what you do to take care of your 360 there is ALWAYS going to be a chance it will break. Even newer 360s. My launch unit broke on the 5th of this month and I am STILL waiting for my UPS box to ship it for service.
BUY A STORE WARRANTY OR REPLACEMENT PLAN SO YOU CAN TAKE IT BACK TO THE STORE IF IT BREAKS, LEARN FROM ME! PLEASE!
Get a warranty, use a surge protector (warranties usually don't cover electronics damaged by lightning), and do NOT use an intercooler.CradleXX
do not use a cheap surge protector b/c ht e 360 need GOOD CLEAN power from a socket and surge protectors has been known to cause the ROD also.
