Halo's strong point is that you can have one hell of a time playing it with your friends. I know in college I set up a lAN with the suite next to ours and it was frikin fun.
There is no denying that Halo is completely overrated, but there is also no denying that it is in fact a very good game. The thing that sets it apart from other shooters are presentation. It's a very immersive shooter. Also, with Halo 2 and Halo 3 multiplayer is a huge aspect. There are so many game modes, so many different ways to play, and its very polished and thats why people love it.
On the topic of Halo 3 not being that large of a step over Halo 2, I agree, and I'm kind of disappointed that they didnt do something more spectacular, but at the same time all I really wanted from it is a conclusion to the story and new multiplayer features, and thats exactly what they are delivering.
I've never seen another FPS with a bigger and more fleshed out back-story to it. If you actually get into and and appreciate the Halo universe then there's so much you can read about that's not even in the game. There's 4 books and a fifth being written and they're some of the best books ive ever read. So just going on story alone Halo is a GREAT franchise.
The gameplay is refined to the smallest detail, with so many weapons in the game and all of them can stand on their own if used properly. Most FPS make their staple gun, usually an assault rifle, and throw in alot of guns around that but ultimately the staple gun is your best bet. I like how Halo doesnt cop out in this aspect. A fact that Halo-haters seem to ignore.
Not just in their guns but Halo has probably the greatest grenade-play in any FPS. How many FPS's truly intrgrate grenades into the game, hardly any. I think i threw 2 grenades in ALL of Halflife 2's campaign. Halo spins this on its head, making the use of grenades just as important as the rest of the weapons.
I could go on and on about things like the vehicle gameplay, which some FPS's dont even include, and the ranking system in the multiplayer, but no one wants to read super-long posts so i'll end it at this.
Halo 1 is getting old now and it is still a good game but at the time the game was outstanding it didn't break any rules or come up with anything new but it did provide great graphics, a good storyline, with some of the best fps gameplay to date. If you had of played it when it came out you may not feel that it is so overtated.
The reason people like the series is just that the storyline is good it has a great multiplayer and for an fps it good wholesome fun.
Halo is a lot of fun and there aren't many good console FPSs out there. When Combat Evolved came out there was pretty much nothing. The only two games people remember before Halo are Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Those guys went on to make Time Splitters and now Haze so they're still the only other good FPS developer that I can think of. What I don't get is why anyone thinks KZ2 will be good, especially knowing what happened to KZ1. That developer doesn't have the greatest track record and isn't known as a great FPS developer. Bungie was and is known for that.
The KZ hype, whether it be for the first or now second game simply proves that gamers are still blinded by graphics. If someone sees good looking graphics they immediately think the game will be amazing. Some people even start talking about how awesome the game will feel playwise after only seeing a trailer. It's hilarious and infuriating at the same time. I'm not saying any of the games we saw at this years E3 look good or bad, but what I am saying is nothing stood out that much to get the hype that's out there.
yea same here i really like but i dont luv its just a fun game to playI like it but I dont love it.
I thinki most people like it either because of the great story or the multiplayer.

I honestly don't know dude, Ive played Halo CE, & Halo 2. Great games but really overrated IMO. I enjoyed Gears of war more than both Halos put together. Halo 3 really hasn't impressed me much either. jarhead1990Same here.
i think it's totally overrated also. i played it for a bit cause it was the only game me and a friend could play together online. but i really think this game is quite poor.. i have so much more fun online with games like battlefield.
i ended up giving gaylo to a friend who likes it.
Wow. Gaylo. Witty.
Any game that is popular is going to be overrated in some way or another. Look at how many people still swear Bond is the greatest console FPS ever. How overrated is THAT game. Yeah, it WAS great at the time because that was some of the best 4 player deathmatch. Go back and play it now and see how good it is now. I played Bond again a few weeks ago with a friend just for nostalga sake and we were both oh man, this is harsh. Is it still considered one of the best? Yeah. Overrated? Definatly. Does it mean it's not a good game? No. Console players have different experiences.
