When I play games on my 360, I can occasionally hear a high pitched noise coming from the box as if the disc is lightly touching the laser-reader or so for a brief moment. After a while my games begin to start suffering from disc-read errors and slowdowns. When I take the disc out there are no noticeable scratches until I put it under very direct artificial light, usually at an angle. When I do this I can see a ton of tiny tiny little radial scratches all over the disc, represented in this picture as the red lines. However, unlike in this picture literally every inch of the disc is covered in these tiny scratches.

I've tried calling microsoft about it but they said they can't do anything to help me.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this and how I could fix it?

Thanks in advance

Is this a joke? that picture looks like a bad photoshoped picture, the scratches are off the disk, and its not even a xbox 360 disc. Don't be mad if this is real but seriously, PS3 fanboys can't trick me as easily.

Edit. I dont know if your a ps3 fanboy, but I looked at that picture, those red lines are so fake, and also, there wouldn't be any red lines. Your xbox is the devils or something.

What do you expect? It's an Xbox. Looks like your Xbox is taking its first leap into the bin. Just get a new one or w.e.

If microsoft doesn't know about the problem, then it doesn't exist. They say that microsoft can't help them.

The red lines are just a representation of what the scratches actually look like, because they're so minute they wouldn't be picked up by my camera. ;)

lol that is so funny. you need to lighten up and stop thinking "fanboys" are out to get 360 owners. maybe you should stay away from system wars for a while.

It does sound like the last legs of your xbox to be honest bud. If you want to repair it you could tryto replace the disc driveby buying another one off ebay or something, but if I was you I would just cash out on a new 360. Maybe MW2 Bundlexbox;)

When you have to start replacing major components, you are just better off replacing the whole unit. Believe me, the hassle is not worth the marginal savings you will incur shopping for parts and not to mention the time wasted in this endevour. Get yourself a new unit and enjoy it...Maybe go for an upgrade?

Since MS won't help you, and the xbox is still doing it, I would go ahead and replace the disc drive. You could pick up a rrod xbox or a broken xbox or even a disc drive and put it in. Pretty simple process really. There are a lot of tutorials on how to open the xbox and then just unplug the drive and put in a new one. Worth a try for a cheap fix.

If you have the 360 setting vertically you may want to place it horizontally and see if that stops the issue.

This made my day. Thanks for not knowing what "represented in this picture as the red lines" means, M4Ntan.

Nice edit to make things even worse for yourself haha. Anyways, to the OP, since it seems like your 360 is on the way out anyway, try turning it over. Gravity may help keep the disc from making contact with whatever it is making contact with. Thing is, I don't see what would make marks like that, but then again I don't know what a CD laser looks like when its working (like its constantly moving in and out or what not).
