I'm planning on getting an Xbox Arcade without a Gold Membership...

Will I be missing out on too much? I don't have an HD TV and my internet sucks, so I'm going for the cheap option. Is the lack of a large hard drive that big of a deal? Thank you for your time.

I wouldn't get it without live, but that's mostly because the majority of the games I play are shooters. If you're really into RPG's or other genres that are more geared towards single player, then you really don't need live. However, I would definitely get a hard drive. Most games that come out these days eventually get some kind of download content, and you're handcuffing yourself if you don't get a hard drive. Also, arcade games basically require you to have a hard drive. (a couple of arcade games is all it takes to fill a 512mb memory card)

Arcade Games Usually are for just like Local Multiplayer but it is a waste to have arcade games without gold because every now and then microsoft gives away free arcade games so if you do get a game i would recommend Ultimate MK3 or Braid Which to me are the best offline arcade games

If you are going to just play games offline, then you may be ok with this. BUT...If one day you want to upgrade your TV or if you want to bring your console to a friend's house who owns an HDTV, you'll have to buy the HD Component cable or HDMI cable. The Arcade has 256 MB of internal memory. If you are only using it for game saves you'll be ok for a while. BUT...If you ever want to get downloadable content for your games, you will have to get a HDD. Either a 60 GB which will cost you $100 or the 120 GB at $150. If you somehow purchase Live Arcade games, you may get by for a very short while on the 256 MB if you only get a couple games, but that space will be taken up very quickly. If you ever get a taste of Live through a free trial, you may end up wanting to sign up. You may buy membership cards or just sign up on a yearly basis through your credit card. You won't be able to do anything without your HDD. I enjoy Live. There's a lot of cool content out there IMO. Game addons, despite some people's complaints about price can be nice additions. There are cool videos, there's Netflix. There are some unique XBOX Live Arcade games out there. See Braid. And it's main usage, playing games online gives you so much more value out of the $60 games that you buy. I say at the very least get a Pro system with the 60 GB HDD. The HDD and the option to go HD with the included Component cable are worth the extra $$. IMO, I think you do miss out on a lot of stuff otherwise.

Having a 360 without online MP is like having a cell phone you can`t call out with, eventually you will want to upgrade because of all you are missing out on.

Last time I saw in a local gamestore of mine, you could buy a 20Gig HardDrive with 3 free months of Gold with it, for about £30 - £40. So it's about the same price as a 360 game. So if you want to go for the cheap option I'd say just do it. However, it really is all about the online when you've got a 360. Sure there's a lot of fun to be had in single player too, but online MP is so great.

Guys, let me clarify, my internet REALLY sucks. Even if I shelled out the cash for a gold membership I'd get disconnected every other minute. And I don't think I plan on downloading much.

How do you connect to the internet? Do you connect your ethernet cable to a router or a laptop? Maybe you could try investing in the 360's wireless adapter or something. They're getting cheaper nowadays.

Then why ask us. It sounds like your mind is made up. Do you live in Antarctica or someplace like that, if not, then you will prolly upgrade your internet some time in the future, so why not allow for that?

You need a harddrive to play on xbox live my friend. Getting a gold membership might be a waste of money for you.

Okay just to let you know they discontinued the 20 gb hard-drive and replaced it with the 60gb.

i'd recommend getting the hard drive even though i'm not big on playing online games (i prefer local multyplayer and begin at uni thats easy to achieve). Reason is with a silver membership you can still download loads of content - whether its arcade games like castle crashers or baird, demos or extra content for games you've bought. This can quite easily start to add up, and if u have a crappy internet connection u certainly won't want to be downloading the same stuff several times lol

No HDTV and No Online? Get a Wii. If you already have a Wii....start saving for a better TV.
