I'm playing my XBox 360 on an old 27-inch standard TV that was bought in 1999.

Soul Calibur IV works fine on it but the text is kinda blurry. I have Assassin's Creed but haven't played it yet. Those are the only 2 360 games that I have so far but I'll get more. Will other games work fine on it?

Unfortunately most X360 games have small, blurry text when playing on SDTVs. If you get an HDTV or just hook it up to your computer monitor though you'll be able to read the text without any trouble plus your games will look better. Personally I wouldn't go splurging money on a 1920x1200 monitor since most 360 games max out at 720p. Chances are your current PC monitor has a resolution of at least 1280x1024 so just buy the VGA cables ($40 I believe) and you're set.

I might buy a cheap flatscreen TV. The connection to the right speaker on my TV is going out. I have to mess with the connector until I get the sound to come out of it.

Every game is playable on a SDTV. Some games have really small text though that's almost impossible to read (like Dead Rising & Penny Arcade Adventures)JML897

You wouldn't be playing them on the computer, you'd be playing them on your monitor. In other words you use your monitor as an HDTV since that's essentially what it is: a small HDTV without a receiver. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than going out and buying $700-1000 HDTV, especially when you factor in all the crap that you'll have to upgrade once you get your new HDTV (you're going to want HD channels so that's an upgraded cable package, DVDs will look blury on it so now you need a blu-ray player or a very good upconverting DVD player, and if you go for the blu-ray player you now have to pay at least $10 more for every movie you buy).

If you don't want to play on your monitor and don't want to upgrade your TV though then you're SOL because there's no way to make the text readable without playing on at least a 720p screen. Personally I'd suggest the monitor option unless you've got an extra grand or two laying around. I play my 360 on my monitor and it's great. My games ook much better on the monitor than they do on an SDTV.

If it's one of those glass pannel ones that has the staticy screen just make sure to degauss it regularly (by 1999 though they probably degauss when you shut it off/turn it on)..... I only say that because my friend is playing on an old 20 something inch and everytime I come over his colors are all screwed up or he has some color 'sticking' around the corners of the screen (he apparently waits for me to fix it....that or he's color blind lol).

Most games look good on an SD TV (although definately watching in HD has more of a wow factor to it) , infact running it on an old SD TV can cover up some of the graphic artifacts and get games to run smoother....Like in one case if I play Forza 2 on an HD TV I will get screen tearing on the bottom of the screen consistently (no matter what 360 I'm using either), on the SD TV there is absolutely no tearing whatsoever... and hell some games were made for it! If you compare Farcry 2 in HD to SD you actually see more of the world on the SD screen as screwed up as that is...

Get the games you actually want, worry about the screen later ;) .

Ok, i'll put it in a way that maybe you can understand. After playing on a hdtv, 360 games are unplayable on a sdtv. A friend of mine has his xbox hooked up to a sdtv and it gave me a headache trying to look at it. I couldn't play it, so that makes it "unplayable". really though, if you can afford to get a xbox you can afford to buy a cheap hdtv for 200 bucks.

I have my 360 connected to a Sanyo 61 cm standed tube TV which i bought in around 2001-2002 and it works like a charm. I have no trouble reading the text for most games bar one and thats Lost Planet..

If you want one just to mess around with your XBOX and don't want to cash out for a lot of money, you can get like a 22 inch for around $300-350.If you want a serious TV that you're going to use all the time for things other than the Xbox, then you're looking at cashing out over $800. That is if you want anything over 42 inches.

Last week i just upgraded to a 50inch LG and its great :P(GOW2 Blood Splatter :D). Only cost me £700 which is not bad. My old 28inch SDTV work fine, just similar issue as others (text can be hard to read). If you don't have the cash for a new TV, use the monitor my brothers do that on their 22 inch dell and it works great.

I guess it will work, but once again if you want the best graphics you should go with HDMI.

if i was to do that is there anyway i could set it up to watch tv too? I also watch television on the tv i use to game but i really do want hd quality.

I also recommend upgrading to a 32 to 42 inch screen. Don't be ashamed to uselayaway if you need to. There is nothing wrong with setting up a monthly payment plan.

HDtvs make adifference even with old last-gen games. God of War 1 and 2 are some of the few ps2 games with an in-game progressive feature that you can turn on and off. Both games look nicer when you turn progressive on, and use widescreen.

Unfortuately this is a fairly common problem when playing HD games on a SD television. A more notable example was Dead Rising which suffered from this and wasn't patched by Capcom.

There's a little store called MicroCenter (actually very big) near my city. If you have one of those close by then you HAVE to check it out. This goes for everyone too...my favorite store of all time! I just got a 19in Acer (similar to the one in the 2nd post) and its amazing.

I guess if you get HD cable/satalite and your box has the ability to play over HDMI... maybe it could work, but I can't comment as I have never tried this... I am pretty sure though, that if the monitor doesn't have a turner... then it is not possible...

I know you can buy something like THIS... which is an external tuner for monitors... but once again, I can't comment on how well they work since I have never used one...

I can afford $350 but not $800. I don't necessarily want one that's really big but an HDTV would be nice.

Monitors don't have TV tuners, hence what makes them monitors instead of TVs. However, you can find tuners for $50-100. You can either get an external tuner like someone already linked or you can get a tuner card or dongle for your PC which will also act as a DVR. Also, those tuners usually come with an antenna attachment which will allow you to recieve over-the-air HD channels for free. While you won't have cable networks like Comedy Central you will get channels like Fox, ABC, NBC, etc. Plus the quality on an over-the-air receiver is actually better than what you get with cable since the signal isn't being compressed.

I have 2 HDTVs and love them for 360 and PS3 BUT for the most part I don't see a large difference when I play on a standard TV at friends' houses.

Some games liks COD4 and 5 have barely any difference at all in my opinion.

I play my 360 and PS3 on a 21" standard def TV, and I have to give it a slap sometimes because the picture or sound cuts out. And my PC is so old Diablo 2 has frame rate problems.

As long as the outlets for the 360 are going in the tv it should work. And sense some games do have small text your tv does not work so stay away from RPG's without dialogue. For your benefit.
