Everytime I wanna go on Live, I have to worry about other people cruising the net so I don't get lagged out. We share a Linksy's wired router, and a Alcatel speed touch modem. I use to just disconnect their cords from the router to free up the connection, but I don't wanna do anymore fist fighting. I'm not very keen on this issue and the alternatives...any suggestions? I don't live with my parents either, so don't tell me to move out of the house.

Well, I have a router as well and I never lag to badly and my family is always on, how good is your internet? Try resetting your router and settings if your having connection problems.

Does your router support quality of service? its a feature that spreads the bandwidth evenly.

I'm not sure, I'll have to check. Can you cite one that does? Sounds interesting...

You can distribute the bandwidth evenly as DopeyDavoid says. To be honest I think that's the fairest decision if you're all sharing (and paying for) the same connection. Alternatively you could just use off-peak hours when your room-mates aren't around or ask them nicely :)

The router is 100% mine... The internet is a different story.

it would be awesome if you had access to something to do packet shaping. Then you could set max QoS to your IP and then rate limit everyone else down to silly low levels of bandwidth. I know there are expensive enterprise solutions out there for that but not sure if there is anything open source you may be able to use...look up "open source packet shaping" in google?

If you're the admin of the router, problem solved. You can easily change how bandwidth is distributed as said above, assuming it's not a $20 router. I do this sometimes when I'm on xbox live, roomies never know the difference.

Me to, Just tell your room mate to stop looking at Pr0n. It slows the speed WAY down. ;)

As mentioned before, QoS (Quality of Service) is a feature of most routers. What it can do is prioritize certain ports/devices so they don't get slowed down by other users on the network. It may not work great, but it's worth a shot (didn't make much of a difference for me).

Since you have a Linksys, I'll mention the steps to get there*:

1) Log into router configuration page (default: http://192.168.1.1)
2) Go to "Applications and Gaming"
3) Subheading "QoS"
4) Configure

You'll get best results if you're connected via ethernet cable to the router. Also, Linksys' firmware is generally basic and not very customizable - so 3rd party firmwares such as DD-WRT work even better (especially for QoS). Good luck.

if you buy a wireless router to connect to your modem so they can jump on the wireless router while you

connect directly to the modem
