How do you feel about marketers placing advertisements in video games, or places such as the XBox Live Marketplace? Does it bother you, are you neutral, or do you like it? Please discuss.

as far as XBL, it really doesn't bother me....I don't mind, although I know A LOT of people do...personally, I kind of like it, keeps thigns fresh

as far as in game, I think it depends on what's going on....for example, if your playing a racing game, its suppose to feature a ton of in game advertising because thats what tracks are like in real life......however, I think it can be taken overboard, for example something like Guitar Hero 3.

I'm still waiting for the day games have commercials in them, and that is the day I will barf.

haha I agree with your statement about commercials. There is NO place for commercials in video games in my opinion.

I think advertising is ok. If the loading screen is showing something other than the game, such as a commercial or something for say Toshiba, it would just be too rediculous.

Video games used to be the last sole refuge from advertisements, but now its like theyre popping up everywhere. I was playing ET:QW and there was an advertisement for a car on the side of a destroyed building. That really annoyed me. I don't play games to be marketed to. But I suppose as with everything else, even game companies are now only worried about the bottom line.

I don't see it as a big deal on the live marketplace. I usually find out about stuff on there anyways from the advertising. In game i think racing is fine. Something like GTA sure why not on some billboards or whatever to make it more realistic. A game like Gears 2 with ads...that wouldnt work because of the time and place setting, and its pretty dumb for a game like that.

agreed.

i don't mind them in racing games, but some games shouldn't even have them. something liek the xbox dashboard. its only $5 but still have a lot of advitising in them.

It doesn't bother me, I don't really understand why people flip out over a Dell XPS computer (like in F.E.A.R.). I mean, who cares does it really take you out of the experience?

yeah like others have said, it all depends on the context of the ad. I'd love it if there were never any ads but at the same time, gotta be realistic -- if a company throws a huge chunk of change at a gamemaker for an in-game ad, we can't blame them for taking it. There are profit-making opportunities available in games. I don't mind if the ad is on a bilboard in the background or if it's on XBL or in a waiting room like Battle.net, or if it can be integrated gracefully into the story or scheme of the game. In the game World in Conflict, during the intro cutscene where the U.S. is being invaded, you see a Burger King restaurant get destroyed. It was kind of cheesy but at the same time it was at least somewhat believable. Just keep it along those lines and don't stop the game or alter the game completely in favor of an ad and I guess I'm ok with it

A) If it helps fund the project and make it a better game.

B) If it is subtle and looks like something you would expect to see in a game, for instance billboards in cities/sides of race tracks.

C) If it doesn't get in the way of playing whatsoever and is generally not annoying.

If it goes by all these then It's ok.

i don't mind if they advertise in things such as billboards, or if they are on vending machines in video games as long as it makes sense. If pepsi wanted to advertise, then stick the ad on a vending machine or on a can of soda in the game, etc... the only thing that bothers me is when ads interrupt. Not necessarily in games, but in watching online videos. I really dislike being forced to watch a commercial before being able to view the video.

I personally liked how the King was used in that game... ads only bother me when they are in the way...if some game designer decided to place an ad in the way of my view of a game, or if i'm forced to see an ad, then it would upset me.

It never bothers me. If they made the ads load, thought, then i'd be pretty upset but sometimes the ads are informative.

I don't mind it on the dashboard. It's okay when placed inconspicuously, like along the side-boards in NHL 08. But in game liek GH, with the "Red Bull" bodyguard or something like that it's ridiculous. I likwe the way GTA does it, making fun of product placement :P
