Me: So to begin, tell me about your entry to Xbox 360. Him: I purchased an Xbox 360 premium on January 9, 2007 to begin my 7th-generation console life. It was truly a blast for me, having loads of fun with GOW, R6V, Forza 2, you name it. It wasn't very long into my life on Xbox Live that I learned of the rampany RROD problem, but my 360 was too new and I was having well too much fun to even fathom it happening to me. Me: What was the death of your first 360 like? Him: Well it was towards the end of October, and while my console would like once or twice a month freeze up and require me to restart it, it froze three times that day. The next day was fine, but on Friday, October 26, the big blow came. During a game of Lone Wolves, trying to get my Level 30, the game completely froze, accompanied by a loud, low-pitch buzzing sound. Shockwaves tore through my body's nervous system. I feared the end of this 360 and three weeks without one. My fears were correct - as soon as I restarted the console the RROD was showing. I was too timid to try the towel trick, so I just made the call to 18004MYXBOX and the coffin. Six times I tried again to operate the 360 but none of them worked. Me: Wow - that sounds intense. So let's now have a complete chronology. Him: Ok - #1 - Purchased 2007-01-09, died from RROD 2007-10-26 #2 - Repaired original console came back 2007-11-15, died from RROD 2007-12-21 #3 - Refurbished console came 2008-01-23 (address issue delayed the arrival of #2's coffin), died from disc drive failure 2008-01-23 (yes, just 4 hours after I started playing again that day, I turned the new system off to have dinner, came back to it after dinner and instead of COD4 starting up, the message "To play this disc, put it in an Xbox 360 console" displayed on every game I tried it on. Apparently that refurbished console was never inspected for anything other than the motherboard when it was sent to me.) #4 - Repaired console came 2008-02-14, died from E74 2008-03-12 (I got an apology call from M$ stating that this refurbishment had indeed been a console sold back to GameStop by another customer and that its GPU only had about a month of life left in it before it blew causing E74). #5 - Repaired console came 2008-04-03, died from RROD 2008-04-11. Apparently M$ did nothing else but repair the GPU (since that's what causes E74). The motherboard had just 8 days left in it before it cracked at the time #4 broke. #6 - Refurbished console came 2008-05-01, disc drive broke 2008-05-14. Since only chats with friends and XBLA games was not good enough, it was off to 18004MYXBOX again. #7 - Repaired console came 2008-06-05, died from E74 2008-06-27. #8 - This is where M$ really f-ed me up. Got it on 2008-07-16, and when I turned it on it was E74 RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. Apparently some evil mismanagement in Mesquite despite the repair covered under warranty resulted in my 360 coming back completely unrepaired. #9 - Arrived in Mesquite two days ago and I hear I am expected to FINALLY get a BRAND NEW CONSOLE. Me: Wow. This sounds quite petrifying. I can totally see you being hugely fed up with M$. Have you considered switching to PS3 and eBay-ing your 360 and its games once it comes back from repair? Him: Oh dear yes I have. However, money has been hard for me to earn and I cannot afford to make the switch, or get a second 360 so that I would have a backup when the first one breaks. And even though most of the games I play now like COD4 and BF:BC are also on PS3, I do have a considerable friends list built up of diligent people who have the patience not to remove me despite me being out of commission so often. Not to mention that despite PSN being free, I hear few players have mics and lag is a problem. I also value achievements greatly - and I really don't think PS3 trophies can be a proper substitute. I do acknowledge that I can make the switch by selling my entire 360 equipment on eBay, but who knows what I might get for it - a lousy auction may be a huge rip-off for me and an enormous bargain for some random puppy out west. Me: So obviously your 360's warranties never have expired, but has M$ given you any sort of compenation for this? Him: I'm afraid not. After #6 died, I really stepped up my energy on the phone with 18004MYXBOX, but for all 8 repairs so far I got the same old deal - one month of XBL gold and a one year warranty. Me: Describe you and 18004MYXBOX. Him: I don't have an official count but I estimate roughly 460 minutes total on the phone to Xbox customer support. That's almost 8 hours, or 51 minutes per repair. I'll tell you, I'm not sure how much more my body can take it after having to repeat my address, credit card # and phone number character for character all those times - especially with an ESOL. At least six times I've had to repeat myself since they didn't hear me properly. Me: So would you mind doing the calculations? How much of the 17 months since you first got an Xbox 360 have you even been able to play? Him: Barely half of them. Me: Thanks for your time. Him: You're welcome.
Although I know many people take care of their 360s and have still been though one replacement or two, to have been through nine suggests problems caused by the user.
Perhaps he keeps them in a closed space or something?
Your friend either has the worst luck in the world or he takes horrible care of his 360. I'm going with the latter. I got my 360 a few months after his yet mine still works beautifully. You take care of it and it will work fine.
Complete and utter BS, plus all the end of 2007 to now 360's are practically free of the RROD, so that means when an old one RR's you holler like hell to get a new console sent instead of a refurbished, thus problem solved.

Whatever guys first of all I'm not giving out his name I bet he would scathe me if he found out I posted this and yes he does just have the worst luck. I mean I know people who are on their 3rd or even 4th PS3s due to stuff like the disc tray breaking down or the error 80010514.

Im not sure how well you read but it looked to me like an interview, rather than a conversation. You'll find I'm sure that they are conducted quite differently from one another. But you seem like a smart guy making very valuable posts so I'll leave it at that.

i doubt this is real but the guy should consider himself lucky. I RARELY used my 360 and now it's bricked and M$ wants 170 bucks to fix it. So he at least got to use his and M$ honored the warranty... I wish I had the RROD then at least I'd get my 360 fixed...

I dont think its that far fetched, I bought my 1st and was on my 4th in about three months, the 4th was good just long enough for warrenty to expire, now I'm waiting for my 5th $110 later, thank god I live in canada and its a faster turn around for us.
I'm honestly really surprised at the wide spectrum RRoD encompasses. Could this problem be shipment specific? In 2 years I've encountered 2 people on my friends list with RRoD and none of my close friends in town. Live in Northern Ireland.
