When I turn on my X360 it gets hot really fast. Not the whole system feels hot but the back. Isn't it the fact the X360 heats up so fast is the reason why the 3 red lights happen. I mean all that heat can't be good.
Also which is better just a normal table fan or buying one of those X360 fans made by 3rd parties. I heard that the ones that uses the X360 for power are bad and voids the warrenty. So is there a 3rd party X360 fan that dos not void warrenty meaning you have to plug it in the wall or is a table fan just as good.
Also where should I place the fan at if I buy a table fan. The back of the X360 or the side. Both of those places look like they have openings allowing for air to come in and out. The back by the way is where the X360 feels hot most of the time while the side feels cool. But this just could be because the fan pushes the hot air out on the back of the xbox.

Extra cooling is not necessary.

Be wary of 3rd party fans like the ones made by Nyko or whatever. They have a certain penchant for melting Xboxen. A lot of them draw power from the consoles own power supply via USB which only makes heating problems even worse as it stresses the hardware. Personally I like to leave a fan blowing on the back of the console on a hot day and if it gets hot enough and it's worked great for me.

There's a fan out there for the 360, i think it was the intercooler one that will actually wreck your system, watch out for that one

So back is better than side.

A fan seems hardly nessecary. As long as you keep it in an open space and stop playing after you play for 3 hours or more and take a quick 10-20 minute break.

I never have my 360 on for more than 3 and a halfhours, and it has never froze or overheated.

no need for a fan, but where do you think the hot air goes? It hot in the back because that is where the vent is..nothing to worry about.

my 360 is 5 or 6 months old and i've had near-zero problems with it ( okay, okay, so Viva Pinata tended to freeze up... but that's really the only game that froze my 360 ) -- but my point is that i frequently keep it powered on for many hours at a time, up to 7 - 8 hours with no problems.

i keep it horizontal, and have it in a tv stand with an open back ( but not real tall shelves ) and no external fan blowing on it and it seems great...

But, reading all these posts about xbox360 problems, i wonder if my console being so "young" means the problems are right around the corner...... god, i hope not.

Ihave had my 30 since its glorious launch in 2005.I always play it horizontal, the only time I think it gets too hot it when you leave it on carpet. Putting it on a flat surface like a table, the XBOX 360 should properly cool itself. I f you are having problems with your console freezing up then it is more then likely your power box or your console is getting too hot. GET THEM BOTH OFF OF THE FLOOR!!!! I run mine sometimes 15 hours at a time. No problems!!!
