Is anyone else having a tough time hacking in BioShock?

I understand how to do it but it just doesn't make sense. At one point you have to get a pipe from point A to B but there isn't nearly enough pipes to get it all the way across. Does anyone know how to do it?-MlKE-

Haven't got to play the full game yet, but in the demo I basically just flipped tiles like mad until I found the one I was looking for.
