I have a feeling I'm going to get slapped in the face by you guys for this thread but F it. My opionin so if you don't agree with it cool.

So I never played Half Life 2 before last week, I picked up the orange box and couldn't stop playing it. After beating it I woundered to myself why in the hell was I ever playing Bioshock. Half Life 2 is an older game now (I think two or three years now) and bioshock just came out not to long ago. How the hell did people go crazy for bioshock and not compare Half Life 2 to it? Maybe I missed thouse threads.

Does anyone agree? I could go througheverything HL2 andBioshock do the same andthen show how HL2 is light years away from bioshock. But to save you guys from reading a huge block of text I won't.

Well if you want anyone to agree, then you're gonna have to post some examples.
And even if it is a ripoff, I definately don't think it's a bad one; I have both The Orange Box and BioShock, and although I like the former, it's just not as special as BioShock.

What?! No. If anything, HL is a ripoff of System Shock, which BioShock is the spiritual successor to.

It is obvious that the developers were inspired by HL2 in terms of story and to a lesser extent, atmosphere. I'd hardly call it a bad ripoff. Maybe a good ripoff. I really enjoyed this game and haven't had that much fun with a single-player FPS since HL2, so I for one am grateful that they "ripped them off".

Edit: I have never played System Shock, so sorry if I'm missing something there.

I don't find HL and Bioshock to be even remotely similar. They look different, have different storylines, and play different.

The part in Bioshock that made me go "Holy crud am I playing Half-Life 2" was when you hop on that vehicle and start driving through the country side and blast the hell out of dropships. Or when I cam across a Big Daddy and though "Is this an ant lion?".

The countless times in Half-Life where I was almost dead and then was able to freeze my enemy and kill him was pretty gnarly.

Oh and what's with Alyx and the Little Sisters? Hello! Identical!

I liked BioShock more than HL2. Half Life may be the grandaddy of all modern FPS but that doesnt stop it from just comin off as generic to me. Its fun and its solid its just that the games that have succeeded it in the genre have done things in a more fun way.

BioShock is one the best 360 games out right now, and yes the Orange Box is also a good game i don't see how it is a ripoff and expecially not a bad one. Bioshock is a great game and not a ripoff of anything, its just an original awesome game

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was awesome.....hahaha!! Yea, I never played Half Life 2 until now (currently playing through Orange Box)because I have crappy PC's, but I did play all the way through Bioshock back in August and I must say that there's nothing similar about the two. Bioshock was awesome by the way, Half Life 2 is cool, but I like Bioshock more. Like someone else said, the Flood from Halo definitely took their inspiration from the Crab Looking zombies in Half Life 2.

My cousin actually made this comparison whilst i was playing the demo of Bioshock (i had not played HL 2 at this point), but he said that the way the story was told seemed similar as cutscenes are not used. (Im not sure if Bioshock has cutscenes or not but from the limited amount i have played, the demo, you do still get bits of the story through gameplay.

The Black Mesa experiment accidently opened a portal to another world letting horrible creatures in. The experiments at Rapture turned people into horrible creatures. The levitation gun and the plasmids offer a similar twist on the game mechanic, albeit the plasmids definitely take it 10 steps further. Both of them have the aspect of this "mastermind" giving pre-recorded speeches and whatnot, with the same "distopia" type of feel.

Again, Bioshock isn't really a ripoff, but I see where there could be some inspiration from HL2. Still, that's only natural. Very rarely does any game not share similarities with other games, and very rarely are games, even really good ones, 100% original.

again, Bioshock was made by a lot of the people that made System Shock back in 1994... this game even predates the original Half-Life as is considered one of the early games to push forward first person games with stories.

No Way! BothBioshock and Half Life 2 are both total ripoffs of Wolfenstein 3d! I mean comeone, look at it, all first person, all have guns, and in all three titles you pick up stuff. And if you want to go even deeper, dont the both evil forces in the game sorta represent the Nazi's with all the oprresion with the Combine and creating of "Master Races" with the splicers??? Man...how could i ever enjoy Bioshock or HL2 without thinking of who it ripped off.

Technically the original Half-Life is a rip-off of sorts (but did manage to bring many new ideas to FPS's) of System Shock. System Shock was released in 1994 and HL was 1998. So in esscense Bioshock is the predcessor of System Shock and is not a ripoff of the HL universe. Both HL2 and Bioshock are outstanding games though!!

Just think of BioShock as "imroved" verson of HL if you want. But didnt you enjoy both games? I know i did. And this kind of similarities you've mentioned can be found in many games. Like, Qake Wars is a rip-off from BF2142, Forza is rip-off of NFS and Rock Band is... well you get the idea. As long as you enjoy the game, it doesnt matter if its a rip-off.

The terrible truth is everything is a bad ripoff of Half-life 2. Take Animal Crossing for example; textures are everywhere! Valve thought of textures first, but Nintendo beat them too it. Same for Bioshock. The game uses a DVD; who did it first? Valve.

I've played both and found them to be similar in some ways such the melee weapon part ( wrench/crowbar) and mayb a little with the storytelling both characters a mute....but the atmosphere in Bioshock is absolutely amazing, second to none. I think the most important area where both are similar is the fact that both titles are High quality titles and very entertaining.

My personal opinion though, Bioshock is a much better game than Half life and so far would get my vote for game of the year.

As much as I love reading, I appreciate you avoiding the long and drawn out comparison game... HL2 and Bioshock are NOT to be compared
No doubt was HL2 out way before the other and doing things that basically put it way ahead of the FPS genre, but each serves its own story and gameplay perks. If you like more sci-fi stuff, HL2 might be right while Bio does its fair share of fantasy too... so what else can be different between them besides simple stuff like weapons and characters?!

both awesome games, but in no way should either be discredited for their great adventures 8)

First of all, the words "Bioshock" and "bad" should never be used in the same sentence.

I've played both and I was amazed by bioshock, but I just got bored with half life

Almost all games re-use the ideas of other games. It is pretty much a must or games would have been dead a long time ago. The problems come when games re-use too many ideas from other games. That may not be case with all games though.

IF you want to see the biggest copying i've noticed in recent years then play Kill.Switch and then play Gears of War. Gear of War is really just the next level of Kill.Switch.

No, BioShock is BioShock and Half Life 2 is Half Life 2. Rap is Rap, Pop is Pop, Reggae is Reggae, Mexican music is Mexican music. Although you can list both titles on a vendiagram, I feel they'll each have their own strengths and weaknesses, with very little similarities.

It's not a bad thing to rip off HL2, as it's amazing. And Bioshock has nothing in common with HL2, other than they are both better than average shooters.

As someone who used the gravity gun pretty much all the way through Bioshock, I can definitely see the resemblance. Factoring in age, HL2 is vastly superior. Even as a later release I prefer HL. Bioshock was fun but so incredibly overrated by most people.

the story line is different. HL2 is a alien invasion and BShock is a paradise gone to hell. also the setting is also different where BShock setting is not only superior not in graphics but art directon but it is totally new and no one has done it yet.
