its pretty popular theres definitly some things that could be improved. i can't really say if its the best. Theres few mulitplayers that catch my interest for a long time. Cod4, Socom and CounterStrike.
for a game to be considered the best ever on any platform or genre it somehow has to revolutionize or even offer something new to the table...COD4 is a great online multiplayer game but in no way can it be considered the best ever...people often forget games such as goldeneye for the N64 or perfect dark...these games revolutionized the industry for FPS...also games such as HALO CE brought about new and industry changing characteristics....COD4 is great but no where near the pinnacle of multiplayer FPS let alone Multiplayer games...super smash bros, mario kart, goldeneye, perfect dark, halo ce...now these are industry and ground breaking games and are the best ever...
they need to improve a few things, espically the matching system. its pretty much non existant. I borrowed it from a friend, completed the single player and am currently playing online, when i play free for all or mecenary deathmatch i am paired up with players on their 3rd to 5th prestiege who are clearly better than me, in the matching portion Halo 3 is much better although you still run into people who are like lvl 40 in team slayer and 10 in lone wolves. It aleast gives me a good chance most of the people in the room are of my skill.
Its all in taste once again, but it is definately not the best of all time. You see the war between Halo 3 and COD 4, this thread just brings every other game into the mix and COD definately will not win

its up there but not the best... best of all time is Counter Strike if it wasnt for the graphics and the source engine people would still be playing that game crazy..

Goldeneye is way outdated already Perfect Dark is starting to see it's age.. Halo is still as good as it was 10 years ago but the series has remained the same. COD 4 is at least in the top 10 FPS Multiplayer games, and easily #1 for 360, PS3.
No, as others have stated it isn't the best because it misses out on alot of good multiplayer features. Any game that depends on live so heavily loses some points in my book.
I would also like to see some more of these "great" multiplayer games featuring some interesting modes of play, not just the standard deathmatch and capture the flag modes. Support for bots/enemies in multiplayer would be nice also.
My vote for best multiplayer game would probably be split between timesplitters 2/3 and goldeneye 64.
If you asked this question a week after COD4 came out 90% of the people would've probably said it was the best. I predicted months ago people would start turning on COD4 because it was getting too popular, just like they turned on Halo. Looks like it's started already.
I've never liked any COD game online. I just traded my copy of COD4 yesterday for Lost Odyssey.
there are many games that exceed CoD 4 in multiplayer. i mean i've been playing Brawl's vs mode for 4 hours straight and not tired of it, not to mention the hundreds of hours i probably poured into Melee. even if you're just counting 360 games, CoD 4 is not the best imo.
I don't think so, I enjoyed Halo 2 more. Also Goldeneye comes to mind, I just freaking loved that game when I was little.If you meant multiplayer as a whole, arcade, sports then I also have to mention King of Fighters on the PS1, Street Fighter on the SNES. Those are off the top of my head, I'm pretty CoD 4 has nothing on some old school titles.
No, there really isn't that much to hold some people's interest for very long. I don't see how some people make it to LVL.55. I couldn't make it to LVL. 23 without getting bored to tears. I'll always hold a dear place in my heart for Goldeneye. Playing four player splitscreen on a 17 inch TV with three of my buddies were some great times.
