If I were you, I'd give it a rental. Ibought the game for teh Halo 3 beta, bad it only took me a week to beat the game, and I traded it in after the beta.
It could have been really good but after the story is finished there really aren't any sidequests like GTA so theres not too much replay value. You might like it but rent it first.
