Is Dead Island Riptide really a disappointment?

I've been playing alot of Riptide recently and was thinking about what others thought about it. then coming across the review on gamespot, seeing that they gave it a 4 and a bad review. Some points that were said i can understand, but i have quite a bit of fun playing it especially with the drop in/out . Just wondering if others agree with the review or think they were a bit harsh with it?.

I kinda do. I LOVED the first game, even made a video recapping the story before the release of Riptide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0yZyOnnXWM (Shameless plug). But once I played it, I just was not feeling it anymore. I guess I just had my fill with the first game, but the fetch quests and the 20 swings to down the 1000s of zombies, I just didnt want to do them again. I think alot of people felt that it played very much like the first game and they felt the first game wasnt that good. I think for me, I would need to play co op. Playing with friends can make any game fun, but I think, for me, it'd be necessary for Riptide. By the time you're carrying the engine for the boat, Im like "Man, this would be so much better with someone else here to do the shooting." and my interest sort of faded from there.

I agree, especially with the fact of "doing it all again". It's just way too similar to the original. Also, the boat mechanics in this game are atrocious. For the love of god, make it third person when you are in the boat. And it's so un-fair whenever a zombie throws you off the boat.

They didn't make it 3rd Person because it would compromise Immersion, Ha HaHa.

Yeah, it was certainly a disappointment to me. I loved the first third to half of the original Dead Island, but I felt the game steadily lost steam the longer it went. Part of the problem, for me, was that it went from what felt like a more open world environment, where you could just wander and explore, to a more traditional, not-quite-linear but definitely restricted game-y environment (specifically with the jungle and prison). By the end, I didn't regret my time spent with the game - and still, on occasion, enjoy replaying Act I - but I didn't come out of it thinking, "Gimme more of that." And that's exactly what the did with Riptide: took the weakest part of the first game and just bloated into a full-length game. Add in the fact that they just recycled the same characters and skills, nearly all the same weapons, and damn near all the art assets from the first game and the laziest on display was just infuriating. If they had moved the game to an entirely new location - pretty much anywhere else in the world - and given us a new crop of characters (preferably with new skills, if not an altogether different leveling/upgrade system), maybe throwing in a dozen or two new weapons and a handful of new zombie types (while reskinning all the originals), then I would've welcomed a new Dead Island game. Though, what would've been even better is if they'd pushed that open world environment even further, giving us sort of a Dead Island meets Skyrim hybrid: a massive world that could be wandered and explored for hundreds of hours, with all sorts of random events and wonderful little secrets tucked away. Maybe even throw in a little DayZ in the way of survival elements, like hunger and thirst, to add that extra layer of immersion. Even if the game had turned out a glitchy, frustrating mess, I would've been happier with it because I could applaud their ambition. Ultimately, for me, Riptide was a colossal disappointment and deserved the negative reviews because it was a sloppy, lazy, half-assed effort that pissed away all its potential by minimizing instead of expanding what it could've been.

That video was awesome.

Excellent job.

Thanks a lot! It was such struggle making that video lol. I wonder what happens if youre playing by yourself and a zombie knocks you off the boat. Probably sucks.
