My tv does not support 1080p and I won't be upgrading for some time because I just got my current tv.  My current tv's max resolution allows 1080i.  It also has an HDMI input.  Would the elite be worth getting for the HDMI connection?

Note: I'm not concerned about HD space, etc... the HDMI interests me the most in the elite - but is it much better than component at 1080i?

Heck no. The elite only improves upon 1080p with the HDMI cable. Just get the regular console. I never download anything either.
It would not benefit you 1080i TV.

Thanks, sounds good.  I actually have the 360, but knowing there is the possibility of using HDMI made me wonder if getting the elite would be worth it.

If the difference isn't worth it, then I'll stick with what I got.

Even some of the people on the AVS forums say that they can only notice a slight difference between 1080i and 1080p and these people are engineers and what not. Yeah the improved HDMI and HD are the biggest crock. If they would have included an HD DVD Drive or something else that would have sold me a little bit but no.

Also my friend if you are getting into HDness you might want to check out the HD DVD add on. Trust me you will never go back to standard DVDs after watching HD DVD.

Well in my case I'd say yes. I have a 150 Inch 1080p Projector and wow what a big difference digital image makes. I also have a 32 inch LCD 720p/1080i TV and the colors do look a bit better. Everything is much brighter and colors are much more realistic with the HDMI cable.

Digital to digital is better than analog to digital, and the regular 360's out is analog, and any HD res is a digital image.

I got an Elite yesterday. I spent a few hours tonight trying to compare Component vs. HDMI on the Elite. My TV does not do 1080p, so I tested 720p and 1080i.

The HDMI was definitely a little sharper picture than the component. However, HDMI's colors were not as bright and as fluid as component at 720p. At 1080i, the colors were about the same. However, at 1080i HDMI, I was getting some weird feedback, such as lines in the picture. With the component cable, this was not happening.

I use HDMI for 1080i Cable broadcasts, and the picture is superb. I'm not sure why the lines in the picture with 1080i HDMI. Maybe I have a bad Xbox.

Since I prefer to run games at 720p, I think I like the components colors better here. Or maybe I just need to re-adjust my TV when I'm using HDMI, but the more I think about it, the more I just wish I had kept my Premium instead :)

Well I can still return my Elite if it comes to that...

For me yes. I only have a premium 360, but I have a PS3 and a HDMI compatable tv and there is a big difference between component and HDMI. The HDMI picture is much cleaner crisper and has better colors than component. Even though the TV only does 720p and 1080i. Of course HDMI looks best when used with 1080p, but there are a lot of HDTVs that only do 1080i and 720p and they have HDMI in-puts. If it wasn't good with those resolutions the TVs wouldn't have them. So to answer your question most likely there will be a better picture quality with HDMI even thoug its 1080i and not 1080p, just have to factor in the quality of the HDTV, and some say the quality of the cable, but I think most cables are the same. And as always there is gonna be someone who says I'm wrong we don't need HDMI blah blah blah. For me I'm bummed my Premium doesn't have HDMI, the picture could be so much clearer.

360s HDMI is a dud, go use VGA or something else if you got the option, paying out for a new machine simply becuase they nailed on a port to the back makes no sense.
