I was under the impression that hooking an Elite up to a 1080p HDTV via HDMI would give you the best picture.

After I hooked it up, and adjusted the picture in the System menu, the optimal picture was 1080i.

I thought this would give me the best picture...

If this isn't the way, please tell me how to get the best picture on my Xbox 360!

Just set it to 1080p unless of course your TV actually isn't 1080p.

They say HDMI makes the picture a tiny bit better, but people might just be trying to convince themselves.

either thing could fix your problem:

1. Your HDTV does not support 1080p image.

*2*. You need to update your system dashboard by connecting to xbox livez(all u need to do is put a internet wire in your 360 and it will automatically update) or burn a diskfrom a file onxbox.com and put it inyour 360 it will start to update. (the fall 2006 dashboard update added the 1080p option visit xbox.xom for more info)

well im guessing #2 was the issue here making sure you update your dashboard.

I did do all the updates. And I'd ASSUME that my TV supports 1080p.

It says 1080p right on it.

then the only possible problem is your TV does not support 1080p, if it clearly says 1080p but you cant acess it then i guess not

I CAN access it (I think).

I just went into the System's Display settings and selected "Optimal Resolution" and it sets it with 1080i, Widescreen, Standard even though I have a 1080p HDTV.

I CAN select 1080p and it doesn't deny me to access it, although it doesn't look a whole lot different.

My main concern was that the Optimal Resolution was 1080i instead of p.

By the way, what does adjusting the Reference Levels do?

i didn't even know there was an optimal resolution option. Shows how long its been since ive been in the system menu. It sounds like the xbox is picking 1080i over p, because it will offer you the best gaming experience over highest resolution available. I might disagree with that (you might as well play in 720p if its saying 1080i is optimal, imo). Some types of tvs apparently have a harder time with framerates than others, especially at 1080p, so that might be the problem. If you can still select 1080p and its that big of a deal for u 2 play in that resolution then go for it.

You aren't going to notice a difference between 1080i and 1080p in the dashboard, those are just static images. Just keep it at 1080p and everything should be fine.

In regards to reference levels, I believe that has to do with how the 360 outputs blacks. There were some issues a while back with the washy look over a VGA cable and they added the reference level option to compensate for that. Try them out and see what looks best. I personally like Intermediate.

you either don't have a 1080P screen or you should set your 360 to 1080P

i dont think anythin can be full HD because some business is bound to bring out a better HD resolutionJS92
Full HD is just a marketing term for 1080p. Also, PC already supports resolutions beyond 1080p....

Just pick 1080p from the menu and ignore the optimal settings. If you find that some games seem to be running choppy, try to drop down to 720p and see if it makes any difference. It shouldn't... the 360 can supposedly scale without taxing the game.

On most tv sets, you will not notice a difference between 1080i and 1080p. Unless you have a really high end tv like those new laser ones with a million to 1 contrast ratio you wont notice the difference.

I use the hdmi on my elite cause it makes the setup look better and less messy but if you go to cnet.com and find the article on hdmi and 1080p it states unless you have a 50 inch or bigger TV screen and sit ten feet away from the TV you wont be able to tell the difference in picture (this is what the article says not my opinion)between 1080p and 720p.

HDMI is better... though not monumentally better. It's not like the jump between 480p and 1080p, it just makes the image a little sharper and the colors tend to pop more. I've had my 360 hooked up by composite, component, VGA and HDMI and can officially say that HDMI looks the best.

Nonetheless, I wish people would stop making topics like this here because you invariably get people who don't know what they're talking about passing on misinformation that gets passed on ever further. Out of the many members on this site, I've seen maybe half a dozen that know what the hell they're talking about in regards to HD. I'm not trying to knock anyone specifically, but seriously... go to an HD forum if you want information on HD. If you want ignorance and bad spelling, just stick around here.

you won't notice a difference between HDMI and Component cables unless you actually set it to 1080p

and even then you, won't notice the difference between 1080i and 1080p unless your tv was 50" or larger
