Depends on how low. Any contrast ratio above 1:500 is good.

I think my LCD is 500:1 even though its a Sharp Aquos and it looks fine. I wish it were a bit better but I don't notice it much.

The lower the contrast the less crisp your picture will be and you want vivid red, blue, green.  If you have a HDTV and your contrast is around 600.  You have a very low end tv and you should try and take it back to the store.  You can get a HDTV with a better contrast ratio for the same money if you just look for the contrast ratio number.  You want to look for a HDTV that has at least 3000 contrast ratio and a refresh rate of 8ms or lower.  That wont break your wallet to much.  The high end HDTV's have 12,000 contrast ratio's, to give you some idea of what to look for as in a range.  Try to get a 27 or 32 inch Samsung Slimfit CRT HDTV.  You can get one for 750 bucks at www.curcuitcity.com , Good Luck.

Yes it is bad.. It means your HDTV is cheap. The contrast ratio is the most important thing about your TV. Case in point. I bought my mom an HDTV for Christmas. I tried to cheap out on cheap a HDTV with a low contrast ratio of 500:1 When I got it home, I took it out of the box and tested it. It looked like complete garbage. The whole picture just looked bad. I took it back to the store and returned it. I then spent a few more bucks and bought a better HDTV with a contrast ratio of 1500:1 I took it home and tested it out. Wow, it looked amazing. The picture was very nice and it looked great from any distance and angle. She loves her new HDTV. I just hate paying it off every month, lol..
