is it even possible to use microphone tactics in this game?

LOL. I assume your talking about MW 2 (From the title)... well over time maps will have true names or nick names for areas... Counter Strike Source / 1.6 is my greatest example that team work can be done. In halo 3 it is not uncommon to say "on my x" or refer to known landmarks on a map. I feel overtime if you play with a clan or a group of friends it will come.

overall though it took 2 months on COD WaW until the general language for any map to be common knowledge.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's pretty hard to call of positions in Modern Warfare 2. There just aren't too many stand out areas in alot of the maps. Theres not even a compass.

I don't really understand how this can be a complaint for Modern Warfare 2. Is this not just a complaint about ANY new game?

Don't need team tactics. The game's pretty much about self sufficiency to me.

No. There aren't alot of land marks and stand out areas in Modern Warfare 2's maps. This isn't an issue with every new game.

Were Modern Warfare's maps smaller or easier to call out locations or something? I remember hardcore Halo players had distinct nicknames for certain locations on each map, but I've never heard this kind of talk for MW (I don't play a lot of it really). Yeah, MW2's maps seem pretty large, but I guess main hotspots where people usually go will eventually get their own kind of name for those that really want to use team work. I really don't hear much of that going on, though.

Yeah, I take it you've never played Counter-Strike, everyplace on every map has a name. You'd be screwed if it's that tough to memorize things and then play CS.

Well..the game has just been released last week, it takes time to come up with nicknames for areas. The other day I found a couple of porto-potties; not sure where I can find it again, but it would be a great call-out for a location when I get used to the maps. You just need to find something unique about each area (which I understand is very difficult to find in MW2) and call it something with your usual team. Maybe you can blow yourself up in a warehouse in front of your team, and then call that area: "The warehouse where I blew myself up"

OP says it's difficult to make call signs for most of the maps since most of them lack distinguishing land marks. In this respect Counter Strike was easier. It's maps had more distinguishable areas. Theres a remake of a Call of Duty 1 map in Modern Warfare 2 and it's essentally just a set of trenches in the shape of a plus sign. With out a UAV I can't imagine it'd be easy to determine where on the map you want to tell your friends where the enemy is since it's pretty much a completely symmetric map and theres not even a compass.

The only people who are going to be able to make call signs for these maps and understand them are people who frequently play the game. Where as games like Team Fortress and Halo 3 have easily distinguishable areas and alot of land marks making it alot easier to understand what people are talking about with out having extensvely played them. For example in Halo 3's map "Gaurdian" If I said theres a guy camping with the shotgun near the lift most everyone who's played at least a match on the map know what I'm talking about. It's easy to find the lift, theres only one.

Calm down buddy, just making an observation. When I played MW2 for a few hours straight I found it fairly easy to identify points around the maps. If you were somehow offended I'm sorry man.

my suggestion is do what GAMES are made for...to have fun. Those super serious "play to win" types are what plagues XBL, and essentially ruins games for the rest of us.

Seriously. I miss the days of rainbow six vegas when I could just shout out "left window" or "right building low." Simple maps ftw.

Not that I'm "super serious," but I find it to be more fun when I'm trying to play for a purpose. That's also why I love ranking systems like in MW2. I need incentives!

Did it ever occur to you that some people think winning is fun? Just because don't play like you doesn't mean it's wrong. So long as they don't talk trash I don't see what the problem is.

Did it ever occur to you that some people think winning is fun? Just because don't play like you doesn't mean it's wrong. So long as they don't talk trash I don't see what the problem is.

Unsportsmanship is another thing that plagues online gaming....and it "coincidentally" goes hand in hand with the "serious, play to win" types. People who play to win, love competition. They also, obviously, love winning. They want to be number one, whether it be in sports, gaming, or whatever. So to answer your question, "Did it ever occur to you that some people think winning is fun?"

Yes it has, and "playing to win" and thinking wining is fun is not the same thing. If you have a kid that keeps losing game after game, and then finally wins one, Yeah, it will make him happy. Now take that same kid, and now he is playing to win...If you are playing to win, and you keep losing game after game, chances are, you're going to be a miserable, frustrated, trash talking a-hole. And then when you finally win a game, you're gonna make sure to let everyone know that you are awesome, and they are not.

Typically in gaming, the "play to win" mindset and behavior is coupled with trash talking, as sort of a macho, alpha male instinct. They want to let you know that they have "1337 skillz" and you're just a "dumb noob." I mention this to address your quote "So long as they don't talk trash I don't see what the problem is," Because if someone is PLAYING to win, there is a good chance it will be accompanied by some degree of trash talking. When a person's prime goal is to win, when they make winning and "being the best" their prime agenda when they game, they tend to develop a sense of cockiness, whether they are doing well in a game or not. I mean, if a player is playing to win, what happens if they're not winning? Now the "winning" turns into "whining."

I am 28 yrs old, and been playing online since the days of dial up. I have found through my experiences with online gamers, that players who play to win, are typically sore losers, and sore winners as well. I would like to emphasize that there is a difference between people who play to win, and people who just win a lot when they play. I have played with a ton of players that are really good at games, but it means nothing to them. They don't play to win, they just happen to be good at games. I have noticed players with this type of mindset are usually laidback and casual, and could really care less if they place in first place, or what their K/D ratio is.

I didn't say what I said because I was upset someone didn't play a game like I did. I said it becasue through my experiences gaming, the "play to win" types are the sore losers, the whiners, and the trash talkers. They are the reason that in the rare instances when I play competitve online, I don't even bother using a headset.

I haven't played MW2 yet, so i don't know about the maps, but my suggestion would be just to give it time and just play, and soon you'll be able to memorize the map locations.

@H0RSE: When does online behavior have to do with tactics and cooperation in a online match. As far as i know jerks and idiots are not cooperative and don't listen or give out any tactics to anyone. They just do their own thing.

you two should stay close. if you get shot and you call out where, he should have a good idea when you call out a generic observation. that's if he has not seen you get shot or whatever already.
