Is it even worth it anymore to buy games at full price?

I'll say it, games are slowing getting too expensive.

While the quality of games are increasing, so are the prices. But with preowned games and marked down prices a few months after release, I don't really see the point in buying a game on it's release date. Don't get me wrong, I preordered Fallout 3 for the special Lunch box. But if it didn't come with a limited edition metal lunch box, I prolly wouldn't have gotten the game until it dropped in price a little.

In the past few months, I got the following games for about $30:

Dirt

Assassin's Creed

Dark Sector

Great games, all of them..

Aside from getting a shiny, limited edtion, metal lunch box; is there a good reason to rush out to a store and get a game when it's released? Couldn't we just wait a little while until the game drops in price?

That's my point. I can get the best games released this year as well.. but I don't mind waiting until they drop in price. If it doesn't matter when you play the game, then can't you wait a little while until the price drops?

And any claims of me not being a true gamer.. well I've been playing video games since 1982. For the record, I was 3.

Just because he doesn't want to buy games on launch day at $60 doesn't mean he's not a true gamer. That comment is downright laughable.

I hardly ever buy new games anymore because of that same reason. Although if there's a game that i'm REALLY looking forward too, then i'll pay the $60 for it.

that's about the dumbest thing i've read on here.

on subject, there are some games that i've found to be worth the $60 or $70 price tab. but it's up to you. if you don't mind waiting for a price drop, i don't see the big deal. after all, it's your money. just ignore the children.

Yea the craptastic games. Most of the best sellers stay $59.99 for a year before even dropping to 40-45. Halo, Gears of War, Oblivion, and many of the other best sellers were 60$ for a very long time.

You make a great point. I can think of one, maybe two really good reasons (even thought they aren't always reason enough to get a game at full price).

Firstly, it's possible that the game will lose some of its online playability after the first few months it's out. I mean that there is obviously going to be people that lose interest in the game after 3 months or beat it and leave it and less people will be online for you to play with, on the other hand, that may be a good thing, haha!

I suppose it holds some value to have the game once it's out so you can start playing sooner, but that depends on the person. If you have no problem waiting, then why not, but if it is something you really want immediately and you are going to get more enjoyment out of the game, then you need to weigh wether or not getting the game 3 months earlier is worth the extra 30 bucks or not....(some people just have to have the game and can't wait, lol)

On the other side, if you wait, not only do you get the game for cheaper, there is a better chance you can get more downloadable content from the time you buy it! That way, you don't have to go back to a game you have already finished, and you get the DLC right from the start and you don't have to return needlessly to the game you have already finished!

If you wait, you also have the chance to see the reviews! Many people reserve a game, get into the hype and they feel stuck into purchasing it because they already pre-ordered it and the game sucks! Like Too Human...That's my opinion, waited till it came out, bought it used for 35 bucks used, beat it in one night, it sucked horribly --again, my opinion-- but then I sold it for 40 bucks and made a profit, so it was well worth it. And I got about 600-700 gamer points from it, haha.

I suppose waiting is better when you weigh everything out, but it really depends on the person! I'm just glad I wasn't one of the suckers to fall into pre-ordering a hyped game that played like a 7 year old made it, the story and gameplay...

Totally agree, but I have a pretty tight circle of XBL friends (i.e. real life friends) who i regularly play with, so i've preordered GOW2, and GHWT so that i can be playing these games before my friends get bored and move on.

Currently i only preorder 'must have' online games (Halo, COD and Gears) but i'm really excited for GH4

If you can wait for a price drop on Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Fable 2, and Left 4 Dead, you deserve a medal. Those games will not drop for a long time my friend.... a looooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnng time.

Here is what I do unless it's a really long game or it has great replay value:

Buy for however much it costs on ebay, play it and finish it, resell on ebay. It's cheaper than renting...

Price drops in games are dependant on the developers. Bioshock is a great game less than a year old and its 20 dollars on steam. Gears of War on the other hand, stayed full prices much longer than other games. Buy a game if you want it... what else can you say?

Well, I used to be one of the gamers who bought every new game brand new. But just like was mentioned here i noticed that the price dropped quickly on a lot of games as soon as a month later. Because of that and the rising cost of games in this day and age i've decided to cut back on buying games brand new. Now i only buy a game for full price if I am really anxious for that particular game (for example, Fable 2- which i preordered the Limited edition version) or if I trade in enough games to get credit for a new game. I find that i feel a better sense of "getting my money's worth" when I buy a game cheap and find it really enjoyable. Whereas if I buy a game brand new and I end up hating it then I feel ripped off.

is it worth waiting? yea I am starting to think it is.

I just want to mention that some games just don't go down in price. I only know of one but still. Mario Kart Ds was $35 when it went on sale like 3 years ago and it is still $35.

Do you know what enternainment industry really rips people off, but most people still take part, movie theatres! The comparable cost of 1 ounce of popcorn in a movie theatre is more the cost of 1 ounce of the best steak on the market! For flippin popcorn! And seiously paying $10 or more for a ticket... Paying 60 bucks for a game really isn't all that bad in perspective, you will get far more enjoyment, time, and keep it for far longer... IF you don't want to spend the $60 then wait...sometimes you wait longer than others...or go in with a friend and wait until you beat it and hand it over. That's what I did with the original Fable game upon release...

And did you know that Mario Kart DS, is still one of the best selling DS games around... That's why it hasn't dropped in price, because countless of everyday --non-hardcore gamers-- are willing to pay full price and be sucked in by Nintendo's ploy to bring gaming to everybody! They have stopped focusing on the hard core gamer and thus they are making crap loads of money, but it is working. This is why MKDS is still selling like hotcakes and hasn't dropped in price, but it is sitll work the money, because it is an awesome game...

Agreed. I don't mind paying 60 dollars for a good game, in fact I never regret it. Of course I always research before the game comes out to see if it's worth it, but when I do get a game, I almost always get it day and date of launch, and more than gladly hand over my 60+ dollars. If it's a good game, the developers deserve it. They worked really hard and deserve a lot of respect for it.

idk, i like buying games the first day, but i buy a lot of used game too. like assassins creed, Test Drive Unlimited and games like that i bought used. but like the big titles i buy the first day. liiiiiiiike: Skate. since i LOVE skating. uhhh Halo3 cuz its Halo3. and Gears of War since thats my other favorite game. those are the only 3 ive bought on release basically. the others i wait like 2 weeks to see how they are and if they're worth playing. then i go and buy them for like 10 bucks less or full. but i dont really mind 60 bucks, it could be worse...

What the f*** do you mean not a true gamer? Are you a stuck up pre-teen/teenager who gets all his games from mommy and daddy and never has to pay the full $60+ price??

Games are stupid expensive, and the point of getting them when they come out is because by the time the price drops, there's usually another game out that you want to play. The problem with that is simple: the games cost an arm and a leg.

$60+ is almost 2 tanks of gas for me, being about 3 tanks a month (2000 VW Jetta, costs about 35 a tank), aside from the $10 to $20 a day food budget (from regular home made meals, all 3, to eating out), the $100 cable and internet bill, the $50 XBL bill, the $100 to $200 water bill, the $30 sewer bill (yes, it's retarded, but we have to pay for the sewage lines in Aurora, CO), the $300 electric bill, medical bills (which vary a lot in price), $350 car insurance... yeah, can't think of any others, but there are more... that's about... $1215 a month... aside from paying for entertainment like games.

$1215 for me. Yeah, because I've got tons of money to throw away on games. That's about $14400 a year, aside from all the unexpected costs, like dates, movies, repairs, maintenance... it's not exactly cheap. It usually ends up being around $25000 a year, usually more, so don't ever pull that bullsh** garbage of "not a real gamer." At least I pay for it.

I hear you man, it's not cheap, and personally, I think game quality is going down, not up. Sure, games look more cinematic and have better graphics, but most the games I've played in the recent years aren't as fun as games I played 3 or 4 years ago, sometimes even longer ago. $60 is a rip-off. $50 felt just right, but of course they would kick it up for the "next generation." If they do that again for the following generation of games, I'm not getting the next console. I will only pay full price for games that I absolutely want. Games that I want, but not badly, or games that I think will be keepers, but not games I'll spend a lot of time on I wait for. A price of around $25 to $35 is where I like to sit.

I swear, there are so many absolutely ignorant and stupid people that live in the world today... makes me sick.

O.o why don't you calm down there tonto? he never said he's tight on cash, he said that he's willing to wait for any game if it saves him 10 bucks, now 10 bucks is like an hour and a half of work on minimum wage, it's just ridiculous, so take a chill pill, and no, i don't mean acid... jack*ss

I gotta agree with Ra-Devil here, games are costantly being overprice

but the rant was a bit unnesessary

well... you obviously aren't a true gamer....conversation overConsole_Gamer13

Well, actually, if he waits on new releases and gets 2 for the price of one when they drop, he gets to play and enjoy more games. I would bet that means he plays more games than you. Does that mean you are not a true gamer?

i still buy games new. i think they should stay at a standard price instead of keep going up. n64 and ps2 games were $50 new now they r $60. iam2green
No, I remember always paying $60-70 for ps2 games when they came out. Games are roughly the same price, although depending on the game if I know it's good ill pay full price for it, otherwise I'll wait for it to come down in price.

Just because he doesn't want to buy games on launch day at $60 doesn't mean he's not a true gamer. That comment is downright laughable.BioShockOwnz

It depends. The only reason I started buying full price games over the last little bit is because I found that I wanted the new ones more than the budget games... and was willing to pay the difference. But if you can be satisfied with the budget games until the newer releases drop in price I say go for it. Every new game eventually becomes a budget game anyhow... You don't miss out on being a gamer (as much as these 'true' gamers think you would because they spend more), but you will miss out on being able to come online and brag about the new thing you just played. That is all you are missing by waiting, the ability to brag about what is new. You don't have to miss out on being a gamer, and you save some money in the process.

It is completely unecessary to buy a game at full price.

I only buy a game at full price if it is a part of a long running series that I am a fan of. The next game I pay full price for will be Silent Hill 5, and I can't wait.

And I am still laughing at the tard that thinks he is a "real" gamer by paying extra.

and i pay for all my games you 35 year old moma's boyConsole_Gamer13

Don't your parents monitor your computer usage...?

This topic is about opinion. Some people have it in their budget and feel they need to spend the extra money to get the game immediately --like myself with certain games-- and others don't find it that important to get it immediately and pay the extra dough.

Just because you don't pay your own bills, work a full time job, etc., doesn't mean you can ridicule someone for their reasoning to wait and spend 60 bucks on a game. Go be a child elsewhere rather than giving crap to the working class who have to budget... Learn to appreciat money and then come talk to us.

BTW, before you jump all over me, read my other posts in this topic and I want you to know, I work 30 hours a week, go to college 15 hours a week (which means I have 30 hours of college homework), own my own place and pay all of my bills...
