Is it just me, or is Oblivion quite difficult to get to grips with??

I've just got a 360 and after a lot of good advice from fellow Gamespot members I bought Oblivion. It maybe worth pointing out that I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, and therefore for me Fable rocked - it was easy to get into and all the training / tuturial parts got me right into it. I'm not having the same thing with Oblivion! After only a couple of hours I seem to be totally lost with what to do (for instance I can't even work out how to level up!). I'm also finding it quite difficult to kill people - I'm using a mixture of a flare at range and then using my sword and shield. However as soon as the melee starts I just seem to get whupped!! Considering I opted to be a Nord I was hoping I'd be a bit better at combat!

If anyone else has had a similar 'settling in period' it would be nice to know - as at the moment I'm feeling somewhat lost in the big bad world of Oblivion!!

Also - how in God's name do I level up!:D

Cheers

You level up by running, using your magic, blocking attacks, Sword attacks, swimming, etc.....

After you have level some things up you need to go sleep and then after your done sleeping a screen will come up and let you put exp points where you want. Just make sure you put them where it helps your character the most.

For games like this:

READ

THE

MANUAL.

You'll learn things such as the fact that you'll need to rest in a bed or bedroll to actually level up once you've gained enough experience, and how to jump from place to place via quicktravel and the map instead of walking everywhere.

It's not really a game you can jump into if you're not familiar with the series. Choosing your character type and major abilities is also VERY important when it comes to leveling up. Select your major abilities carefully! You want to select the ones you use the most as that is how you actually level up in the game. If you have alchemy for instance as one of your major abilities and you're not planning on doing any alchemy in the game, you're going to level up much slower. On the other hand if you're going to be doing a lot of fighting with a sword, you'll want to select Blade. The best advice I can give is start over and pick make a custom character type and pick the abilities you'll think you'll use most in the game.

You level up by increasing your main abilities. After awhile you have to sleep and you level up your attributes. Yeah when I bought it Ikinda freaked out. I couldn't even figure out how to equip items and then when I exited the sewers I crapped myself and just looked around. I then swam acrossed the river and got mowed down by some bandits. My first experience was baffling to say the least but after awhile I learned how to play and now 31 levels later im still saying that it is the best game ive ever played. You'll eventually learn how to do everything. Its hard at first but once you learn everything you will have a blast.

The loading times on that game pissed me off so much I broke the game disc in half.

Its an okay game, otherwise. Takes a million hours to do anything.

hmm... it sounds like i need to start over with a "Blade" character. I thought it would be kool to play Oblivion all sneaky n' stuff, but it just isn't working out that well for how I've ended up playing Oblivion.

I've found myself running all over the place fighting everyone I can find, so i need to start over.... *sigh

How do you Quick Travel ? I haven't figured out how to do that yet either !

It's a hardcore RPG, not really something a casual gamer can get to grips iwth easily. It'll also waste so much of your life.

when i got oblivion, i was pretty mch able to jump right in, but probably because i played morrowind. when i started morrowind however all those years ago, i was really confused. i couldn't figure out anything, such as the main plot. Oblivion made it alot easier but i can still see how it may be hard to get into a game that is that big.

Well, in my opinion Oblivion is just too boring. It has allot of stuff in it, but only few of that stuff is actually cool. I mean, you can read books in that game... :|

There is just too much boring stuff in there for me. Plus, I don't like games that are set in the past. So, Oblivion is a no go for me. Even though people specifically pointed out there was almost no boring stuff in it.

It might be wise to not always listen to advice. Because you might just not have the same opinion as everyone else.

Just be sure to select custom character cla*ss, and pick what you think you'll use most for your major abilities... good picks for a fighter are blade, blunt, athleticism, destruction, restoration....

Quick traveling will be your friend when you're outside of dungeons and caves... just go to your map... pick a town or place that you want to go and hit the x button I believe.

I had to read the manual extensively, it took me probably 3 hours to really come to grips with the game. *Then* I started having fun, and between all the achievements and main quests, etc. I played the game for over 70 hours :).

I bought this game with a game guide when it came out. I tried....very hard to get into it. but after 1 week of getting nowhere, not knowing where to go, if I even have the right character for my play style,....and just looking at the phone book of a game guide and all the litttle finite details and side quests, and guilds etc etc etc.....well like many others have said: TOO big, TOO muchfor me!

For the gamer who doesn't consider himself 'hardcore," most RPG's are quite involved, even all the way back to FF1! Oblivion has more than a lot of modern RPG's (I would say it has more than Fable or even KOTOR, Morrowind purists might say it has less than Morrowind). So you'll have to get used to things like not just buying or picking up a weapon, but equipping it. And repairing it from time to time. And increasing your skill at it. Even modding it out with a Sigil stone. You'll have to get used to micro-managing.You'll have to learn to find your way through your inventory, etc.Levelling up only really comes through playing the game. A lot of quests will be too hard for you if you don't level up by killing bandits out on the road and raiding a few caves. On top of this, there are so many extra skills you may or may not want to add to your repertoire, as it's up to you how you'll play. For example, you can totally avoid alchemy, or get really good at it and essentially have important potions at your disposal (like health potions) at all times. You can become killer at magic, or just have a few spells to augment your fighting skills. You can also pay certain characters to teach you skills. It's got a lot to it, as you're discovering, but hopefully you'll also discover the game's got tons of value, lots of depth, and a great campaign that'll easily last over 150 hours.

 I know how you feel! When I first started playing Oblivion, my character was a wood elf thief/ranger, who specialized in stealth and bows. I spent a good week trying to play this character. I finally gave up because it was too difficult. So I restarted as an imperial (I think) who was more rounded than the just a ranged character. Needless to say I had far more success.

To the point:

I hated the game and ended up selling it on. (I gave it more than enough game play time and TRIED to enjoy it - 12+ hours)I thought it was slow, boring and confusing. Everything in that game seemed to put me off. I also have the same view as you about Fable - fab game, great story and such good game mechanics but Oblivion just struck me as awful.

As for the story...I don't know, I was too frustrated with how the game played out to pay enough attention to what was going on.

What does strike me as strange though is the amount of people who say this is their #1 360 game.I get the feeling that some people say it's great but only because the 360 was lacking RPG's at the time...? Maybe that's the case, maybe not but I just don't see why it gets the amount of praise that it does. :S

Fair enough to the people who like it but it just wasn't for me. I think if you can't get into it soon TC, then you simply won't ever be able to. How many hours have you clocked on it so far?

its all about what type of games your into, i admit fable was great and i cant wait for the second one but oblivian is one of those things that is more than a game, its an entire world, not just parts of a town or a smaller area but a whole world and some people dont like that much space which cant be understand when your in it for the action.

As a starter, Oblivion can be quite hard as the game unfolds really, really big after exiting the sewers, giving you a wide variety of options and so fourth etc etc. You just need to blend in it with patience and time, that's how I did mine until I got a guide book which helped alot. I got all the achievements for this game. You need to increase your major skills to increase your level.

same thing happened to me. i was lost and kept getting killed by these goblins. they killed me in like 3 hits. i didn't know what to do, i was stuck. i knew where i was going in the quest, but it was so hard! so after maybe 3 hours i quit, it was too confusing and hard! maybe i'll try Fable 2 since the first was good but i never had an original xbox.

hell yeahhhh it will be mass effect world wont be as big but the graphics will be better the story more in depth the conversations more intense (all in real time) and once again the story, if you dont believe that read the book and you will understand. The imagination is dangerously close to being on par with george lucas himself.

you level up by fighting running then sleep for the screen to pop up todecide what areas to increaes...it dosnt happen every time you sleep

also

decrease the dificulty level to just below half way therefore the enemies dont need sh** loads of hits to die

and be sure to use the sword with level 10+ for deadly blows

That's hardly the case. I've played almost every successful RPG franchise since days before Final Fantasy I and this ranks right up there at the top. Oblivion got all the praise because it's one of the best RPG's ever, period.

People that get frustrated with the game and quit playing it obviously haven't taken the time to learn how to properly play the game and how it is set up. It's like an instrument, you don't just pick it up and play... you need to really learn how to how before you can truly enjoy it.

I know what you mean. I made a mistake in my character creation which forces me to fight hand-to-hand in order to level up my strength optimally (+5 at level up). Tonight, I'll restart at the end of the sewers and start the game again. But this time I've put thought into how to develop my character into a BAMF.

Thank God I'm not alone. Thanks for all the posts and especially for the hints / encouragement. I had done my best to read the war and peace instructions and therefore did find a bed to sleep and still couldn't level up. Now I know it's a pop up I'm all good - clearly I'd just not done enough with the major skills! I think I'll follow the advice and start again and choose more carefully what my character's attributes are. By the sounds of it though if I really get into it it's so big I may be saying goodbye to my girlfriend!! Ha ha!! :D

Quite frankly I just need something to while the time away 'til Fable 2 comes out - you get a freakin' dog for God's sake - I'm WAY too excited about that game!!

The game just has a long learning curve, like most RPGs do. You're not really "supposed" to know what to do right off the bat.

Try reading the manual, or maybe even go for the Prima Guidebook.

War and Peace? lol

I guess compared to the practically non-existent manuals most games get these days it is pretty big.

Just read the manual and pick a class (race isn't as important) that fits your play style.

Very good point about not being expected to know everything right away. It's kind of like your character in the game, going from some schmuck in prison to a hero who eventually goes on to save the world. You start off hacking and slashing and eventually learn the finer points from just playing and exploring your inventory/items, etc. What does each item do? What does each button do? And of course, reading ther manual gives you the slight jump start, but actually playing through the game some is what helps that info make practical sense. Also, being a more straightforward character (as fighter) will make the learning curve a little more managable the first time around, because getting good at the magic requires a learning a lot more finer points.

This game is cake pie. How anyone can be confused is beyond me. You picked Swords as a major skill, you get a sword, and you hit people with it. You win the game. End of story.

LOL. Yeah the game isnt that hard. I find the one post funny about the guy who played the game for 12 hours and still didnt know what was goin on. Do you have a learning dissability? j/k Its just wierd that someone would pick up a massive and slightly complicated game like this one and not read in on how to play it properly. Of course the game is gonna suck if you have no idea of what is going on. This is why 90% of games out there are so shallow, poeple are either to stupid or to impatient to recognise a truly great game.
