Is it me or does Fallout 3 feel really like a survival game.

Im playing on normal and I have no ammo! I hit the 5 hour mark, Ive basical a flamethrower with 30 ammo in it(0 now after one of the crab people encounters), a crappy assault rifle with 40 bullets in it, and a 10mm pistol with like 30. It takes alot to take down some of enemies, I had to go with swinging the bat most of the time to conserv ammo.

Is anyone sharing this experience? Fallout 3 is turning out to be much more of a survival RPG game than a shooting rpg game.

Also, Ive been pointing most of my skillpoints in speech, medicine, and repair instead of into guns just because using speech to get out of fighting, needing more from stempacks and repairing equipment adds more to me surviving.

Anyone else with this experience?

No question!!! But that's why I'm lovin' this game. For ex... when playing Fable 2 I'd look forward to walking from town to town just so I can beat the crap outta anyone or thing that gets in my way and level up with XP, but in Fallout I'm nervous as hell just leaving Megaton city limits wondering if I have enough firepower to even make it to my destination without getting killed. Big difference in the challenge... I'll be playin this one for a while.

:)

That's one of the things gameplay in Fallout was known for. I like games with challenge unless their platform or classic adventure based. This and Left 4 Dead are defiantly going to be about survival and, as a result, hard on the newbies.

My first two hours of this game were spent getting owned over and over again by Super Mutants in the museum, then I adapted my strategy and I'm starting to have a blast again.

It really is about adapting and learning with this game, if you try to play it like any shooter or even like Oblivion your gonna get creamed!

dude, there is a god, finally a fallout fan that actually likes fallout 3.

Honestly, sure the game doesnt inherit every aspect fallout is know for, but its still a great game. Top notch story, and even the side quests are great.

Im up to lvl 5 now, and my speech is up to 80 and investing in the speech related perks: lady killer, child at heart. Im trying to see if talking actually gets more out of gameplay. Thank god that Im playing on normal because I'll would do things really differently on hard.

i completely agree. i mean, just playing on normal is difficult. normally i do this then go back through on hard to get achievements but a lot of games have gotten really easy of late. i think the difficulty is part of the reason im so into this game. and yeah, i def. see the survival aspect. im always low on ammo, though right now i have a crazy surplus but i keep running into the problem of having too much haha

After reading all of this it makes me really want to get this game. I had to pass it up solely because there were too many games coming out at once and I didn't have the money. But I just did a ton of over time and my wife says I can get one more game. I'm thinking this will probably be it.

This is just how the previous Fallout games were. Resource management was always a huge part of the game. The better your weapon skills, your repair skills (to keep your weapons in good shape so they do the most damage) and how effectively you use them factor into how much ammo you have to consume in order to kill whatever's trying to shoot/eat you. Sometimes you have to choose to take a few lumps by beating that molerat to death with a stick in order to save your ammo for the enemies that shoot back.

But that's also the kicker. Sometimes the ammo and weapons you find might be inherently powerful but your character might not know which end of the flamethrower is the flamey one. Firing a missle launcher in combat with a 15 for Big Guns skill is a great way to blow yourself up.

Regarding dialog choices, having a 10 intelligence is a great way to start if you want a character that can talk their way out of most things. Other perks like Lady Killer/Black Widow, Child at Heart will add more options, but other perks still that don't say they add to responses can have an impact. I had one extra option that came from having the Gun Nut perk, for example.

Advice for new players: In the beginning get as close to your opponents as possible and use VATS to get headshots as much as possible. I made a character with 10 Int and 5s for the rest her stats and this is how I managed to survive until I got the rest of my skills up.

I'll have to check that out. I didn't find a single one there, but I often forget to look.

bobbleheads rock, the medicine one in the beginning totally saved my ass. there is one in megaton, you'll have to break into a house to get it though. Hint.

20 skill points per level, plus an additional 3 per level thanks to a perk. That's the other reason I always go with 10 Int when I play Fallout games.

yeh, Im definitely going to try that build on my replay. 10 in luck so far is netting me alot of critical hits and a general 3 points increase in all skills across the board.

One thing that I have not tried yet is creating a character with -below- average intelligence. In the previous Fallout games, if you made a character with an intelligence of 3 it would actually change most all of your dialog options to barely intelligible sentence fragments and most of the characters in the game would treat you differently, often with hilarious results.

yeah it is and thats why its awesome. For example, I was walking around in the Police Station and after clearing out the first level(2 enemies and disarming mines), I went downstairs and i saw all these red markers on my radar and i had no ammo, just melee,so i killed a few bugs and turned a corner and saw a Brute,so i hide(he didnt notice me luckily),but as i tried to sneak up on him,i hit a landmine and it scared the living outta me,lol.

Hey man, like some others said Fallout is quite a challenge. if you're not up for it, play on Easy mode or somethin'!
