No. I actually thought the weapons were some of the best in the series. I really enjoyed the Spiker in terms of the Covenant weapons.

Aside from the Battle Rifle and Sniper Rifle I agree, but it's a game set in the year 2552, guns will be made of different material so there's a possibility they can sound like that.

For the person who mentioned COD, those guns are even worse. It's using modern guns but with fake sound.

I wasn't saying the guns in CoD were uber realistic, I was just saying that I thought Halo was mildly fun and then CoD came out and I quit playing Halo. There is no way they could replicate the sound of an assasult rifle or any gun for that matter in a game. Your character wouldn't be able to hear what was going on half the time in that game.

In a thread about Halo and the sound of it's weapons, COD was irrelevant.

I think deep down, everyone wants to play Halo but they won't because it's popular. That has to be the reason (I don't why anyway, it's an average game) because it's always talked about and everytime someone mentions Halo, I guess there's some rule in the ToS that states you must bring up COD4 and let everyone know that it's better.

It's almost worse than the PC gamers who always come into a thread posting Crysis screenshots, even if it's a DS vs PSP thread.

Well, we console gamers get Crysis as well now so it's not just PC people who can brag about it anymore.

well halo 3 isn't a realistic game at all so you cant expect all the guns to sound "real." How would you expect a plasma pistol to sound?

It depends on the delivery system of the plasma. Nikola Tesla's Death Ray would have been a sonic boom because it could launch a millimeter wide bolt of plasma at 48 times the speed of sound. He was a true genius.

What do you expect them to look like, exactly? I think they have a good contrast to the UNSC weapons. As for how effective the plasma based weapons are, the plasma pistol is great for taking out enemy shield and a charged shot can momentarily stun a vehicle. The carbine is pretty deadly and if properly used can edge out a battle rifle. The beam rifle is pretty useful, if used properly you can shoot consecutively with out over heating eliminating any sort of reload time. And the plasma rifle is pretty useful for taking out enemy shields, it's especially useful when dual wielded. They're pretty good but it takes a skilled player to use them effectively. The UNSC weapons are more easy to use effectively.

of course they are going to look like toys, because it's difficult to create a weapon that appears alien without making it look...well... unrealistic. The plasma weapons have greater effects at times... a plasma rifle or plasma pistol will take out the shields of a brute very easily.

I kind of miss the way the weapons were thought out in the first halo though. Every weapon had a purpose to take out a certain enemy more efficiently

I was under the impression that the pistol was an anti-everything weapon in the original. Seriously, you could take out Banshees with that thing, no problem. One shot to the back and the hunter was down no matter what difficulty you played on. That pistol was a beast.

The only complaint I have about the "feel" of it is when I use the plasma weapons. Seems like they barely do any damage or maybe it just looks that way. The human weapons feel fine. I also love the needler, it sounds great and does a lot of damage if used correctly.

Plasma weapons deplete their shields faster, so it's good for that. That's why I like to double yield with one plasma weapon and a UNSC weapon. The thing I don't like about some Covenant weapons though are that they are really inaccurate. Some of the weapon's shots move slow giving them a lot of time to move out of the way. Good for you if you're getting shot at. Sucks if you're shooting at someone.

this good sir is correct. a combination of plasma and human weapon are the best duel wielding weapons. (smg/plasma rifle, plasma pistol/pistol, etc)

lol...yeah, that pistol was ridiculous. It was a bit limited with the way you can't shoot through jackal shields(unless you shoot through the little holes), but it wasn't that strong against elites. At least it had some weaknesses... even though you could kill vehicles with it from a quarter mile away...lol

The weapons are designed around the games universe. The reason why the covenant weapons depleted shields faster is because they're the ones who invented shields in the first place. They're weapons are designed around shields, I'm guessing, because of civil wars, just like humans. They had to build weapons that could down shields quickly just as humans use armor piercing rounds and slugs. They also fire slower because they aren't bullets, they're energy. Bullets are designed to travel at high speeds while, and I'm again guessing, plasma can only travel so fast.

I dunno, to argue about the weapons is really a stupid argument. It's a futuristic world set in 2552. Of course things are going to be different. It's mainly the reason why nobody argues the fact that a Halo has an atmosphere. Or that the ships designs aren't actually Blah blah blah. If it annoys you that much go play something else, there's nothing that you can do from this forum to change the feel of the guns. They're perfect in my eyes, and I'm sure the developers are very happy with them.

Aside from the Battle Rifle and Sniper Rifle I agree, but it's a game set in the year 2552, guns will be made of different material so there's a possibility they can sound like that.

For the person who mentioned COD, those guns are even worse. It's using modern guns but with fake sound.

All you need is dynamic range audio. Bad Company has this. I think the guns in BC sound the best too.

well halo 3 isn't a realistic game at all so you cant expect all the guns to sound "real." How would you expect a plasma pistol to sound?

skatatay
It depends on the delivery system of the plasma. Nikola Tesla's Death Ray would have been a sonic boom because it could launch a millimeter wide bolt of plasma at 48 times the speed of sound. He was a true genius.

yeah but i still wouldnt say that weapon sounds in halo 3 are unrealistic, maybe futuristic.

HAHAHAHAHA!!! What an absolutely ridiculous conversation. Fairly sure Tesla worked with electricity, not plasma, but still that was enough to get me to chuckle. And the fact that Skatatay then basically admitted that yes, that is how a plasma rifle designed by Tesla would sound...GREAT. LOL

[QUOTE="Palantas"]

I think they "feel" just fine. They feel like Halo weapons.

[QUOTE="bilalinio"]

they feel like water guns or kids toys ..

And on that note, have you ever actually fired anything besides water guns and kids' toys?

I have. They're a lot harder to use and they make my ears feel funny...:) Seriously guys I think what Palantas (sorry to put words in your mouth) is trying to say is that real weapons are very difficult to use effectively and thus don't translate very well into video games without feeling sluggish and inaccurate. So toy "feel" is preferable to real world "feel". It's a lot harder to spin around and clock the guy shooting you in the back with a gun that weighs 20 pounds than Call of Duty makes it seem, but if it felt more like real life everyone would cry that it is "too sluggish" or "too slow".

Aside from the Battle Rifle and Sniper Rifle I agree, but it's a game set in the year 2552, guns will be made of different material so there's a possibility they can sound like that.

For the person who mentioned COD, those guns are even worse. It's using modern guns but with fake sound.

Agreed

I saw this topic on the front page, and was like, "I don't remember posting in this...but there's something familiar here..." Oh right: I posted in it in June. Sorry, Mr. Bumper, but you lose dramatically to the guy who recently bumped the two-year-old Oblivion thread.

Right...Halo weapons. I think they're all fine. The sniper rifle has a great feel and report to it, in my opinion; it's very memorable, like the Warthog revving. The SMG and assault rifle are a little tinny, but not too much. There's way worse out there. Hmm...like the pistol in Doom 3, made this *klink klink* sound. And no, that wasn't the charging (cocking) sound; that was the actualy firing noise. Ridiculous.

Ooo, and on to this:

I agree that there are a lot of realistic elements that wouldn't translate well to videogames. I made my comment to:

  1. Be a smartass. I do that sometimes.
  2. Highlight the irony that so many of these threads come down to what's "realistic." Okay, how do people know what's realistic? By watching Blackhawk Down, Die Hard, and Michael Bay movies?

You went on to make the point that realistic isn't necessarily fun.
