I mean, it was fun and all playing through it...but it's not the kind of game that you look back on in 5 years and think, "wow, that game was great..." I guess the multiplayer is fun, but without a good storyline, a game can't really pull you in as much. Just my 2 cents.

That's a great comparison. The game mechanics are basically the exact same, just tweaked toward a more action oriented gameplay for Gears as opposed to the mood-driven and stylistic approach of RE4. I'll always remember Gears for one thing and one thing only...it was the first quality game to come out for the 360.

It's not really a dumb comparison considering Cliffy B said he got a lot of inspiration from RE4. If you've played RE4, it's very clear how much that game influenced Gears. They are, of course, two very different games and I wouldn't say that "Gears is RE4 w/ a bad storyline", but the influence is certainly there. I'm distressed at the lack of story and plot in most of today's releases. I'm also disapointed with the brief length of single player campaings. What happened to the days of 15-25 hour single player campaigns? Now it's like 6 to 10. It's true that Gears probably didn't "need" a good story, but I would have appreciated one...I'm sure many others would have too.

Some very apparent influences: Over the shoulder camera Corpser scene is very similar to a Troll battle scene in RE4 (even down to the leaping out of the lava after the kill) The Berserker is a nastier version of a Blind brute type enemy in RE4 The Cart sequence also stems from RE4 These are the references most apparent to me, but if I played through the Gears campaign again I could probably list off another couple of explicit references and probably some implicit ones too.

Agreed, I got the whole resi thing starting from act 3. They are similar, but different style games, I personally prefered resi. Since gears was just shoot...move....shoot...move, hell it was a good game before i get flamed to death. But im an rpger at heart. So without a story, to me, it can never be more than just above average.
I agree that Resident Evil 4 was a better game. I also see some resemblance in the game play, though not that much. A couple of other points: 1. GOW was NOT the first good game to come out for the 360. That was Oblivion. 2. While I suppose it is technically true that shooters don't really require a storyline to be good, just as rpg games don't technically require good graphics, it sure would have helped.

Its just you, just because it almost has same view and stuff doesnt mean its anywhere close to the same game.
It's just you. 10 years from now I can see myself saying that was a fun game. And I fail to see how it was even close to RE4. Fighting zombies and rescuing the Prez' daughter VS A alien race bent on destroying the human race. No similarities except guns.
i love Gears of war.. the story was fine as it was.. if i have to sit there for 10min listening to a story about government conspiracy again i will rip my guts out. im an rpg player. when i play my shooting games or fighting games i just want instant action without a motive..just like contra. resdient evil made me say cool game... and gears made me said "oh crap!" and when i go online i feel like i'm another person when i'm killing people :D.. so for me gears is better.
esi 4 is out of this world... a stunning adventure that is near flawless. Gears is a fantastic game that has an unclear story, however features some intense firefights and a decent online (apparently... havn't got XBL) IMO, resi 4 pulls all aces and kills every other game. I will never stop playing.
It's actually a really good comparison. Even one of the game creators admitted that he drew inspiration from re4. The gameplay mechanics are similar. To me re4 is better because it did everything dam near perfect. The only thing gears beat re4 in was mulitplayer because it didn't have any. Just wait untill re5 for the 360 everyone will realize.

People who criticize GOW and RE 4 are not wrong in their accusations, but just look at a different gameplay experience. I have a feeling (and I could easily be wrong) that the folks who dislike this style of play are a bit more into "hardcore" stuff, or really competitive experience. I agree wholeheartedly that GOW was a bit on the short side, but I really do feel like I got my money's worth. RE4, well, is a work of art.

Having never played resi 4, i can't really say witch is better. However, i think wikipedia has a very detailed discription of the story of GoW. For now, im gonna say that GoW is better, because it's sure as hell the best game i ever played

aye you crazy! when we look back in the year 2011, we will certainly remember geras and i GUARANTEE you games will try to copy what it achieved. just like what GTA did to the world, gears will impact crap from graphics on shooters to the originalities of weapons.
