I was just wondering if there's any downside to always having a CD in 360, no matter if it's turned off or simpy sitting idle during downloading demos, chatting, etc.

The reason why I ask is that it was recommended with the PS2 to always remove the CD after you were done playing because not doing so could lead to a heightened chance of malfunctions.

Also, on a side note, is there a limit to how long you can have the 360 on before it runs a considerable risk of overheating?

I leave a game in all the time. I dont think its a big deal so dont worry about it. Just like leaving a cd in a cd player or a dvd in a dvd player dont worry about it.

Ummm correct me if im wrong but how does leaving a disc in the tray (weaken) a disc so it cracks easier. I meen i always leave discs in pc,dvd's,xbox 360 and the only time ive ever cracked a disc is when i threw it at a wall it was so suck (land of the dead game). I dont think microsoft put a disc detierating chemical in the dvd drives, but thats just my opinion

As for how long it can be running for before overheating, I had it playing music off the HDD (yes this had nothing to do with disks) for about 6 hours, before it cooked itself, and desided to show me the 3 dreaded rings of death. It was actually quite convinient it broke becausethe Elite came out the day after so I got that. :)

I think its fine justleaving a disk in the tray. Gears never leaves my 360 unless I am moving it because (I'm not sure on this) the disk may get stuck in the console.

Its fine, moving the console with the disc in there is not the best thing but i do it and have never had a problem. And the 360 should never run at a heat that makes it at risk of over heating, if the cooling is all working fine it will get to a certain heat during a game and stay at that heat, but that all depends on how much ventilation your 360 has and all the other things that contribute to over heating, but as you will probably know there seems to be a problem with over heating so i wouldnt leave a game playing over night just to be safe.

It over heated just playing music??? that possibly proves my 360s gonna be fine because iv had games many times running for over 6 hours and no problems.

I've not had any issues leaving the disc inside, nor would I think it would a problem unless I play football with my 360.

Maybe if your 360 is vertical and the disc slips into the wrong position and when you open the disc tray it gets jammed and cracks?

well, this is actually an ironic issue...my second last gen xbox's cd tray gets jammed unless i leave a cd in it, ie:it won't eject...nothing to do w/ my first xbox, that one's drive just crapped out...anywho, ironicly enough this issue is occuring once again but now w/ my 360...wtf...is it me? anyway, it does the usual, you press eject and it seems to get jammed on something, then re-insercts itself and then you press eject again and finally it seems to come lose, i think at some point leaving a cd inside, like in my situation, becomes a necessity...i never had issues w/ overheating, i can count w/ one hand the times it has frozen up, and still have one finger left, guess which one, ty MS, and the one issue i never anticipated is my drive getting jammed, come on...that is so lame....

Yer, leaving your 360 virtically is askin for trouble. I mean, hasn't anyone noticed the 360 has got one big ventilation thing goin on on the side that is stands upright on. I mean, seriously, cutting that off is like stickin the silicon in an oven.

Btw, correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't silicon detonate at high temperatures? And noI don't mean the 360 is gonna overheat and blow up your street, but like, intemperatures far higher.

I never do that unless i know I'll be playing the game again soon. Like if it's dinner time and i just put the game in. But I usually take them out and put them back in the box.

If you really like the game i'd take it out and put it in the box just to be safe.

Then you obviously know how hot the 360 can get, that heat will harm the disk. If a disk is usually lukewarm and then overheated for a few hours and left without ventalation, such as in the 360, then your disc can either warp or crack.

u can leave it in... just do not move it at all.. i mean picking it up is ok... but no major movement... could cause the disk tray to get stuck... but as for just leaving it in...its fine... heck i left my 360 in my brothers house he braught it to me... i unpacked it...and when i took it out it was upside down... i went to open the disk tray and i had my splinter cell game in there
