A ubs thumb drive will work with Xbox 360 S. But not a real external HDD. Microsoft still wants you to buy theirMicrosoft branded HDD's currently only 250Giger and 320Giger HDD's are available for theXbox 360 slimlines. (320 is not yet sold seperately) only in the Star Wars and Gears of War 3 special edition consoles.

any UBS Thumb drives will work with the slim.

I use an external hard drive. 232GB but only when I can't find a spare USB lying around. It works, I've only used it to move files on to and then to my computer and then back to my console. I was doing the Backbreaker NFL uniforms mod, so it was just a roster file, nothing huge like a game or movie.
