Is it really better either way?

So does any one else notice that after about a half hour or so of playing your 360 gets super hot on the bottom? (horizontal)

I'm wondering if vertical really is the better way to go? But then a lot of people say that vertically the 360 scratches games sometimes.....WTH? So what do the majority of you guys keep it at, vertical or horizontal?

I'm on my 7th console, treat it excellent as I have all of them, its got MORE than enough ventilation, in 20 years of gaming this is the only console that constantly worries me especially with the heat issues. SO I'm curious about wether placment has something to with them crashing and breaking down. When I felt how hot it got it really worried me, especially since I have been having a few freezing issues lately. I dont want to have to have a #8:(

So what position do you guys keep them in? ANd honestly as much as I am against the inter-cooler.....shoiuld I maybe pick up one? I used to have one but garbaged it when my launch console went bad.

The over heating problem won't really be fixed until this fall when the 65-nm GPU and CPU will be available. Until then Microsoft keeps replacing the faulty hardware with the same exact faulty hardware. Microsoft has known that the chips over heat and warp the plastic around them enough to cause problems for a while now. In April of 2006 they signed a contract with a company out of Singapore to produce the new chips.

To answer your original question: the placement of the 360 itself doesn't really matter as long as it can breathe, but even so the overheating problem will still be there for roughly 3-5% of 360's. That 3-5% is 'reported by Microsoft' so it's likely more like 5-8%.

That's a real bummer man. Honestly I can't think of any advice for you, keep it in a cool spot and maybe use a cheap fan. Also verticle does not scratch disks, it just makes it more likely to tip therefore scratching your disk.

Here is what I do, my 360 is set up horizontal, out front of my tv on the box the 360 came with. That's right :) Haven't had any trobules thus far, though It does get hot of course, I occasionally use a fan if I plan on playing for long periods of time.

Thanks guys for the help....It doesnt really seem like there is much I can do. Its to the point where now its not if my system will go bad....its when:(, and as I have said, 20 years strong I have never seen hardware like this:(

I have lots of friends who also are on there 3rd and 4th consoles...some are even GS users..I just dont get it. Its got like tons of room on each side, like a foot on each side to be exact, the power brick is NOT on carpet, there is nothing hot above or below it, I keep my house at a regular 68 dgrees consatntly, I have even had my plug-ins and wiring checked in my house.....this sucks so bad for me, I was hoping that maybe every one would tell me to keep it vertical...that would have been such an easy fix but I have been running my 360 for a bit now and even vertical it still gets hot hot HOT.

Well thanks for responding anyway, and thanks for not flaming. I apreciate it.

i keep my 360 vertical... i have had no problem with scratching or anything. i also keep mine vertical because it lets more air throught the side and more surface area in open space to let it cool off...

just be carful to make sure your 360 is level so the disks dont fall over inside the disk tray.

hope this helps

if you are afraid that it will over heat and damage a game then just buy an inter cooler.

Not worried about damaging a game...worried I may have to replace it for an 8th time, and you are the only person on these forums in a while that have recomended the inter-cooler......Just getting sick of hardware failures, especially since I treat them very good, and every one I have had looks brand new when it goes in to the shop for replacment lol

well what I have for mine is I have it propped up on an old folded up chessboard.  That way the vents on the bottom are always open and not being blocked.  Plus the intercooler really does help, people complain about it not having an effect or making it worse, all I can say is its worked for me and this is comming from somone who fried their first one.

I keep mine vertical and it hasn't crashed during a game yet. I recently took the fan out of my fanstand and made it into a mini-intercooler. Much quieter.

I keep mine horizontal and overall seems to go well.  I had my first for about 10 months before it bit the dust.  Using the elite now and i've given it even more breathing space so hopefully it doesn't have a problem.  Perhaps i should pick up one of the laptop coolers just to help it out.Â
