Yes - this is true - however there are major disadvantages to doing it.For one you won't be able to track your friends without readding them to every new gamertag.Secondly and possibly most important is that you will lose any achievment points you've earned everytime you change to a new gamertag.
i don't think I've ever tried, but the 12-month cards always come with a free month added, so those cards are basically 13 months-worth of Live.
