I'm always sure to use either 2 tools for this:

Bottom line, just don't use anything too sharp and apply only adequate pressure.
I'm always sure to use either 2 tools for this:
- Finger nail - which allows me to control the amount of pressure perfectly (downside having remains under nail)
- Nickel - Nice 'n stubby (at least for Canada), so less likely to peal off any valuable information

make a manual out of it.
step1: unwrap the card
step2: take the card with scratchside up in you right hand (or left)
step3: take some tool(coin,knife,nail,gun,whatever)
step4: Scratchit!

you can use you fingernail after you cut it off your finger:P
