Yes you can regarding you have a hardrive, and the amount of time the demos going to take is obviously going to depend on the size of the file and your internet speed.
LIVE IS AMAZING. you haven't fully experienced your 360 if you don't have live. you can download tons of new demos of most of the newly released games or games that are going to be released soon, some take a while but you can play other games while they download so you won't really notice. get live you won't ever regret it

Consider halo 3 just by itself. You're talking about a campaign that is around 10 hours. Then you might have the odd match with your mates. However Halo 3 with Live is another matter. It totally expands the games life. Let's face it Halo 3 will probably still be top (in terms of Live) this time next year.

So yes its worth every penny and it saves alot of money downloading demos and videos, than buying the magisane then in the shop.
I would highly recommend Xbox Live. With the amount of things you can do and the online gaming, it is well worth the price. Plus if you upgrade (if you haven't already) to the 120gb HDD, you'll enjoy it even more.
