Why would it have to be a brand name to be a system seller? Halo 1 wasn't a brand name and it was the Xbox's original system seller. And unlike Halo 1, Mass Effect has the benefit of being developed by a company that has failed to make a game that is any less than great so far and has made two Xbox games that sold a ton and won Game of the Year awards. Both KOTORs were huge on Xbox, and word of mouth + hype + reviews will get it out that Mass Effect is made by the same guys that made KOTOR and is also a classic. I looked into my crystal ball.
games like Halo and Gears of War benefited from pretty extensive ad campaigns... financed by MS themselves. and leading to the release, you could really hear nothing but the hype for those games. considering its the end of June and the game is coming out in September, the amount of hype for the game is pretty low. add to the fact that games like Halo 3 and GTA IV are coming out around the same time will just further mask the release of this game. when KOTOR came out, its release was in the middle of summer, where the usual game drought allowed it to be released all by itself (same thing happened with Dead Rising, which was amazingly successful sales-wise).
while reviews will help sell the game to the hardcore, its the casual market that gets the sales. games like Okami show that a high quality game does not necessarily lead to high sales.
Originally i bought my xbox so i could play the first spliner cell buti remained a loyal fan to xbox because of KOTOR 1 and 2 and jade empire. Sooo if i didnt already have an xbox 360(tricked out with the mass effect faceplate:D ) then i would be running out to buy one before this game came out, its revolutionary.
no one is camparing it to GTA IV and Halo 3, for real gamers they will buy xbox 360 for this game.

Yeah, Mass Effect is a system seller but, not on the grounds of GTA IV, Halo 3, BioShock, etc.

ok ppl, this is getting annoying. Bioware did not develop KOTOR 2, they did KOTOR and then did Jade Empire. Why does everyone keep going on about how they made KOTOR 2 when it was developed by Obsidian?kevy619
very true and i know this but i still use them in the same catogory even tho if you play KOTOR 1 and then 2 back to back the biowares version was sooo much better.
its not a system seller in my eyes..i mean ill get it, looks cool but im not a fan of RPG so not much going on there for me....halo 3 isnt a system seller to me eitherbecause i dont really like halo...i decided to buy the 360 when gears came out and im not dissapointed...i will be buying mass effect tho becuase the graphics look amazing and the videos looked like the game will be better then oblivion(which i did not like)Brickz187i dont agree with it not being a system seller but i agree that its in the gamers likes and dislikes. i have never understood the big deal with halo....ever, its alright and fun online but not gods gift like people make it seem. im a huge RPG, love KOTOR, loved obliviann, loved jade empire... so mass effect was made for me.
[QUOTE="c0mplex"]no. it will be one of the most awesome games to come out this fall, but its lack of a famous brand name does not make it a system seller.Hott-FuzZ
i agree, games like halo and gta are the quintessential system sellers
I disagree. Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey will attract many gamers. Don't be surprised when a bunch of Wii and PS3 owners flock to 360 this holiday.

Both games were excellent. The only problem with KOTOR 2 was the decision to use an old woman as the main protagonist. We were all teased with the awsome looking guy on the cover and he was killed off pretty easily. Regardless, it was a great game that was a worthy sequel.
That's true about KOTOR 2 being developed by Obsidian and not Bioware. My bad. But regardless, like most people have said, the first KOTOR was superior to the second. In fact, I honestly believe that the first KOTOR has the greatest storyline of any Star Wars-based plot I've ever seen/read, and that includes the original trilogy. Very well-written stuff. And Jade Empire was amazing. Bioware has a strong reputation, though they aren't a household name, and KOTOR was a very popular game. Mass Effect has no Star Wars license, but it has next-gen technology on its side which allows it to do so much more than what was possible in KOTOR, both in terms of gameplay and story-telling. And I think we've seen evidence of that so far. Also, the fact that Bioware created the excellent Baldur's Gate titles (especially the second one) could attract some PC gamers to Mass Effect.
Mass Effect isn't nearly as hyped as the original Halo was, but after it comes out, I think very strong word-of-mouth and post-release hype will catapult it to at least in the vicinity of Halo. Seems like one of those games that'll get more popular as time goes on. People will be like "holy crap dude, you have to play Mass Effect." And that'll spread. Pretty similar to what happened with the first God of War, actually. There was no huge Halo-level hype for that game before its release, but then it was released and word got out that it was basically an all-time classic, and things went from there.
The only problem with KOTOR 2 was the decision to use an old woman as the main protagonist.
