Mass Effect is the best RPG I've played on the xbox 360 (and yes I've played oblivion, fallout 3, fable 2, etc).

In my opinion Mass Effect is a brilliant game

Pros:

excellent story

well constructed choices system

great controls

beautiful graphics

the biotic powers fit in well with the combat

cons:

the mako isn't all that great

most of the extra planets, not part of the story are very similar

the menu system isn't great

hope this helps

Well, it honestly depends on what you expect out of the game. If you go into it expecting a topnotch shooter with a fantastic storyline, then suffice to say that you're only going to get half of that experience. Like most, if not all shooter/RPG hybrids, Mass Effect's action can be a little clunky to control; AI can at times be rather monotonous with battles being more a matter of taking potshots from cover rather than relying on overt strategy; Pausing battles to choose Shepard's powers - or the rest of the crew's, for that matter - can be an awkward situation for certain players, and I don't necessarily blame them. The planets are ungodly repetitive with horrible driving controls, and every time you find a new planet to explore you'll lament that you will. Plus Unreal Engine problems; texture load-times are embarrassingly bad, so you'll be able to literally see how each part of the environment of every character is made up from a technical standpoint. It's neat at first, but it soon tires. The above, however, are really the only complaints I've seen about the game. Once you get used to the battle system, it can be a lot of fun in spite of its flaws. The true grab here, however, is what BioWare does first and foremost - its superb story. Not only do they do a phenomenal job at fleshing out a complex web of intergalactic policies, they throw your character in the thick of it. There's loads of subtext commentary about our own society in there, and the entirety of the game is very well written. The other huge draw is the "open ended" choices you'll make; some of them are kind of hokey with little to no seeming long-reaching effect, but some just might make you sit there for a second in true consideration of just what decision you should make. There's a lot of work with the interpersonal relationships of Shepard with the crew, and some of that harshness of galactic incivility spreads onto your ship as well. I loved the story in its entirety, and think BioWare did a truly outstanding job with the title. It's got a solid length to it - roughly 25-30 hours on a "complete" play-through, but it's easy to miss things. I played Mass Effect five times and I swear each time I found something new. Add in the fact that there are six classes to choose from - three base classes with three hybrid classes, each of which has its own "subclass" that you can choose" - and whether you're going "good" or "bad" in the grand arc of your character, and there's a lot of room for tasting a different flavor of Mass Effect each time. Factor in choices for the really big plot-points that you'll have to decide, PLUS the fact that Mass Effect save data will be able to be imported to Mass Effect 2, well...you can see where I'm going with how it's tackling the term "replayability." Plus, in more subjective terms, Mass Effect tends to have that "suck you in" factor that many games lack. Once the game "clicks" with you, watch out. I've seen it happen dozens of times...and it could happen to you, too. :D In short, Mass Effect is a fantastic RPG, and if you're at all a fan of the Western variety (Elder Scrolls, Knights of the Old Republic, etc.) then it's definitely worth a shot. I mean, there aren't too many games out there for the 360 that are 100+ hours of awesome for $20.

How much are you like your friends? Because if you hang around them a lot and they end up influencing you, you could very well end up hating this game.

Now, I have had some very stupid friends tell me not to buy games, but since I know their tastes and preferences are complete crap, I don't even take in their opinions. But me and this one other friend have liked Knights of the Old Republic and Bioware in general since about 2003, so not getting Mass Effect wasn't a question. Both got it on the first day it came out :P

The only people I can imagine genuinely not liking Mass Effect are those who prefer JRPGs or even Bethesda RPGs, or people who don't like to sit through Mass Effect's talking bits. But if you're a fan of sci fi, have enjoyed Bioware games in the past, or if you're just looking for a pretty good action-RPG, it's a damn fine game.

Agree with above ^^^ Dont get it if you just want a shooter (third person, too). It is a fantastic RPG so if you enjoy a great plot with a whole lot of decisions to make that affect everything, then grab it - its a steal to buy now.

some people love it, and some people dislike it. I didn't enjoy it that much, but others claim that it's their favorite game. You'll have to try it for yourself...

These are good things to look for, however, KOTOR was one of my favorite games on the xbox... but I just couldn't get into Mass Effect. The story was great, but I didn't enjoy the combat and A.I.

If you like RPG's along the lines of KOTOR and such, this is a game like those; a very good game like those. The only reason you wouldn't want to get this game is if you don't have any love of WRPG's... At $20 for the platinum edition (that has bonus content and the DLC) it is a steal.

I can sum this up easily:

  • Do you like shooters predominantly? If so, do not buy Mass Effect. It's not a shooter
  • Do you like RPG's? If yes, there is no question that you should buy this game.

Only get this if you really, really like good games.

getyeryayasout

Win. I'll list out Pros and Cons:

Cons:

Technical Problems are quite hapharzard, gameplay is quite fun but not as stratgized as I expected, Mako (what you drive on planets) is annoying to control

Pros:

One of the best sci-fi stories to be created, period (deserves a movie),The most engaging dialouge I've played since KOTOR 2 (this is probably fact but haven't played many RPG's between the two), the exploration of so many different planets is awesome but can get a bit bland after seeing all of them, the "wheel" (how you access your powers and abilities) is awesome, characters you care about, the option of blue alien sex :P, and it's just an all-around amazing RPG.

Guess what? People have different opinions than others. There are always going to people that like and dislike a game. Why not try renting it and see if you like it enough to buy?

Don't listen to your friend. He or she probably did not take the time to actually get into the game and learn all the controls and get into the story. He sounds like a real tool. but anyway Mass Effect is one of the best game on the 360. So just buy it.

Mass Effect is now $19.99. If I didn't already own it, and knowing what I know now, I would still pay $60 for it.

At the price it is set at now. It really is a good deal. I would advise trying it if you never played any Role Playing elements in games. Cause for new comers it could get a little frantic. But it gets my vote.

Just be patient if you do get it, the first few hours can be pretty slow. But once you get the choice of what planets to explore and have a large crew of teammates to use, it really sucks you in. And the last few hours are the most epic and cinematic of any game I've played. Not hyperbole, it's really that good.

yea the rpg shooter aspect is cool but it does get aggrivating and hard at times...
