As I am sure you all know, there have been reports that the new Xbox 360 with built in HDMI ports are immune to the effects of the dreaded Red Ring of Death. Is this speculation? Word of mouth? Has Microsoft issued any official statement stating that the problem will be no more in this updated console? Personally I appreciate that Microsoft paid for the repair of my older console, but how can we be sure that this new one won't die the same way? And if it is fixed, what exactly did Microsoft change about the console?
From what I know, Microsoft added additional heatsinks to the chips and reduced the fabrication process on the CPU to 65nm, which allows it to perform the same while using less power and generating less heat. So essentially the solution to the problem, in their minds, is to keep the system cooler.

Oh yes, that would be that solution. I once had a 360 running for less than an hour, while open, when it finally got the RRoD, I ran to it and touched the heat sink, it was much too hot. Which is odd, since I had already left that very same system running for 3 continuous days, no power cycles, nothing, and it had no problems at all. Then I start playing Kameo, less than one hour into the game, and RRoD.

From what I understand, all the new ones coming out, and have been for a while now. That doesn't mean that all of those have the falcon chip though.

you dude i remember back in the 80's the 5200 had problems my family went through 3 of those. seriously it has to be research, all the new systems with hdmi (except for the earlier elites) have the falcon chip. also not just heatsinks they also have heatpipe the new ones.
No, having RROD means they can say that they have sold more consoles.
I dont see why the 360 had this problem in the first place. You would think MS, a huge company would spent time making sure the console worked.
Maybe it is reaserch. 'how many people will buy something KNOWING that it has a huge failure rate?'
Now they realise that people will buy a faulty product. They can save costs by making faulty products, and not botherig to fix problems.

The thing is, Microsoft is a software company. Their strenghts are not hardware. That's why the high failure rate isn't a complete surprise to me. And that's why I was disappointed in the news that they were not going to license out the Xbox hardware for other companies like Toshiba to create manufacture their own Xbox. I loved the idea of Toshiba creating a "super" Xbox. A single unit that was a High Def DVD player (HD or Blu Ray) that was also a DVR with 360 functionality. Oh well.
That's a good idea. Wish they would have done that. Who knows if the problem is gonna be fixed but if it is they're gonna be selling like hot cakes coz I know there are lots of people wanting to buy them but not seeing the point as they break so easily.

Yeah, I read that, but it's about the Xbox Live DRM problem when you get replacement consoles. Not the Red Ring of Death problem itself. Good article though.
