sometimes when i turn my 360 on or go to the dashboard after playing a game, i hear a loud screechy sound almost like a motor revving up. is my 360 scratching my disks? i dont see any huge noticeable scratches on my disks but i see little blemishes here and there, nothing that makes u gasp, and my games still work. what could it be?mikeneb430
I've heard those sounds before and thats what it was. I've had my 360 standing upright ever since i got it, and it hasnt made those noises unless it is tilted when running.
Its probably not necesarily 'scratching' them, its probably putting some slight laser burns in the disc though. A laser burn will look like a 'smudge' on the back of the disc, or rings of smudge like crap. And btw, laser burns are PERMANENT, they cannot be fixed with a disc cleaner kit.
Just make sure it is supported very well to where it won't shake or fall over, and you should be fine.
I get that occasionally with certain online games (Geow COD4) and I've examined the disks extensivley and have not seen any scratch marks on them.
And yeah, I'll let my console die before I stand it horizontal :p It just doesn't work where it's located.
i dont have much to say, but i have a related thread i made on disc scratching. it might help.

I noticed my brother has a similar problem with his Xbox. He had gotten the red ring of death, so Microsoft "fixed" it and sent it back. But now it's messing up his games to the point that they don't work. Way to go, Mirco.Wake_of_EdenI did the exact same thing I got the red ring and sent it in and they returned what appeared to be a brand new xbox. Now it's scratching and ruining my disks, and it takes about 6 or 7 tries to get it to read my brand new Resident Evil 5...
