So, I was thinking of getting an Xbox 360 some time next month, but looking at all the Amazon reviews it seems this console is plauged by the '3 red rings of death'. Has anyone had any experience with this and does it occur frequently?

Another issue is price. Its £280 on Amazon, with all the gadgets and dodads included, and then the games are at least £40 a go + Xbox Live fees, before you know it you are spending £500 and tbh with that sort of money I would rather just build a new DX10 PC.

Any thoughts / advice?

It depends on how well you take care of it... Even if you do get the red lights, you can always call M$ and they'll fix it for free. As for the PC part, I wouldn't be able to choose... :P I'm happy with my 360 and I'm going to build a new PC.

In my experience, no, it is not. I have had numerous 360s die on me despite taking excellent care of them. Lots of people have had no problems, so it's really a case by case basis. The only thing you can do is take great care of them and hopefully you will not face the issues that some of us have had to face.

Every electronic piece of equipment has a chance to break. Does the 360? Yes. Is it a bit higher than it should? Yes. Does that mean you shouldn't get it? No.

i had mine for 7 months then got the 3 red rings. in my opionion i think its junk. i paid $400 dollors for something that can't even last a year without breaking on me. its nice that microsoft backs up their product with a 3 year warrenty now. I think spending $400 on something should justify that it lasts a little longer than 7 months. i think its pretty apparent that microsoft didn't have quality in mind when they designed their first batch of 360 that hit the market.

My original launch 360 died 1 year and 1 week after I got it. Luckily MS had a 2 week grace period for their warranty so I got a free repair. After that my 360 worked fine for another 6 months until I sold it, its still supposedly doing fine now too.

I'm hoping my new Zephyr 360 won't fail since it has a new cooling design.

the 360 was made with a bad cooling design. the 90nm chip heats up and the way the cooling was designed, it doesn't do a good job which heats up the console and sometimes loosens the solder and the motherboard falls apart. ms is trying to stop this prob. with new heatsinks, and a smaller 65nm chip coming out soon. the console must be well venitilated for it to last. it has a 33 percent failure rate

yes, elites also have a redesigned motherboard to help it cool, but still has the same chip which heats up. the elite made later on (june or july) have new heatsinks.

btw, a 3 yr warranty for the rod helps alot :)

Mine freezes every once in awhile, but I've never had the 3 rings of death. Got it December of last year.

At the moment I don't see the point in buying a 360, unless you need a DVD player that also plays the 5 or so good games that have come out for the console. Don't get me wrong, XBL is a great service and I like the console, I'd just personally wait until November or December to buy one, when there's a good amount of great games to play.

Also, I don't think ~$1,000 could get you a PC that would have the equivalent performance of a 360, though I havn't looked at hardware prices lately.

it should have been designed better, but i think microsoft was too busy wanting to release the next-gen console first. It is disappointing that so many 360's are breaking down.

xD I can remember I got my 360 from GameStop brand new, and I brought it home and the disc tray had problems opening. I have to say I haven't been a victim of the red lights or disc read errors yet, all in all its a good system. But I've grown to deal with a stubborn disc tray, so I'm just warning you ahead of time, its a good system but don't be surprised by a couple of flaws.

Kameo, Quake4, assorted EA Sports games, a few racing games, and Perfect Dark Zero. Personally, I'd say lackluster at best. Not games I'd drop hundreds of dollars on in order to play. Especially compared to what's coming out in the next few months.

Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case I suck at the internet.

The launch titles for the 360 were pretty good. I mean people beef about PDZ now but it was a great game on launch day. People are just forgetting to appreciate a good game rather than always thinking about the future titles.
