i'm gonna get a 360 soon (finally!!!) , but i sit right next to the tv (it's small) and i am worried it will be too loud. the original wasn't noticable to me so if it's the same noise then everything's good.
also, it's safer horizontal isn't it?

With out the nyko air cooler my 3600 sounds mabye a little louder than the xbox, but with it on it sounds something like a small hand held vaccum. Which is a small price to pay to make sure it dosent over heat.slipslayer_666

Yeah, I use a nyko intercooler. I would describe the sound like a handeheld vaccum. I haven't ever complained, because the gaming experience is well worth the noise.
Just so you know, Don't buy that Intercooler that those guys were talking about above me. It's basically useless as long as you have an opened area around your 360. Also it isn't good to buy because it feeds directly off the powersupply of the 360 so that lowers the power that the actual console recieves. When the console doesn't get enough power, just like a computer, it messes up the motherboard and your 360 is trashed. Also 360's are somewhat notorious for having Power Supply failures. So I'd just stay away from the Intercooler, I don't have an Intercooler and I've had my 360 since January 2006 and It's still running perfectly.
You might also like to know that in newer 360's and the Elite there is a different disc drive that is quite a bit quieter than the originals like I have. The original ones are louder that my gaming PC! I have a ton of fans on that PC too, but don't worry about the noise, the new ones are just fine.
