Is the 360 what it's cracked up to be?

I've had friends tell me to get an Xbox 360 for my new console this year, but with all the bad stories I've heard about them breaking and such, I'm wondering if it is even worth it. Some have said just wait a year and get a PS3 once the price drops some, but I really want some newfangled games soon (I mean, Wii only goes so far in holding my attention). I've never owned an Xbox before though, so I'm kinda skeptical to head over, especially after hearing stories of them breaking or just stopping without any reason really (that's excluding my friends falling out the second story window).

Game wise, it looks like a good system. Most games I'd want on PS3 are on Xbox, and there are a few exclusives that look interesting. I'm not a big online player and I only occassionally play games for hours on end (about once every two months), so having a large game selection really isn't major for me. Graphics look great, which is a big plus for me, though that only carries a system so far. And, to top it off, is it really worth the money if they are probably gonna make a new one in the next few years anyway?

The 360 is a very good console man and well worth the money. I also wouldnt expect a new xbox system until at least 2011.

Most people on here will tell you the xbox is worth it, it is the best console purely for gaming this generation so far and looks like it will hold its own against anything Sony bring out (which ever you prefer is purely opinion, but both are similar the xbox just has more variety). I would recommend a 360 to you, aslong as you are interested in games and not AAAE and all that rubbish, the console is brilliant.

Hopefully the problems with xboxs failing is in the past.. microsoft has released a fixed version that is much more reliable. Its only really the release console that has the major problems.

No offense but that's very much opinion based. PS3 and 360 both have a lot of great titles to choose from.

To the OP if your friends all have 360s and if you remotely like shooters buy a 360 you will not regret it. If you aren't as keen about online play it's a toss up, imo. 360's RRoD (the overheating chip issue) problem is almost a non-issue on newer production runs. Also it's unlikely that PS3's price is going to be coming down that soon because the Japanese Yen is actually very high vs the American Dollar atm. One thing that has worried me is the fact Microsoft does tend to rush out their next gen product soon after their existing ones look at their operating systems. Also between Xbox and 360 was a far shorter time than between PS2 and PS3 but really there's no sign at the moment that Microsoft is planning anything in 2009. Ultimately I'd say if you can afford it get both but really I wouldn't say either is a bad choice. Research the exclusives and based on that buy the one that's going to suit you.

I have both systems and I'd recommend the 360 in a heartbeat. I think the system looks better, the online is better as well as the controller, but of course most of the reasons are personal opinion. I think the only thing the PS3 has going for it is Blu Ray and that might not be enough to push some people over the edge, but it's enough for me to keep it.

Not many 360's get the RROD as often as some of the first units did. The online is great and the 360 has a great selection of games and exclusives (Gears of War, Halo etc). The PS3 also has some great exclusives (Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance). I've not tried the PS3 online but Xbox Live is definitely a lot of fun. If you don't want to shell out that much money, then go with a 360. It's worth every penny.

um, the 360 does have the better selection, but that doesn't mean it has better games, just a bigger pot to choose from. I would recommend getting a 360 even though my has broken twice and I can see a third happening in the near future. Microsoft will fix it for almost nothing.

It's definitely opinion based. The amount of exclusives on either system is slightly in favor of 360 but overall the majority of the biggest games are multiplatform. MGS4 vs Halo 3, Resistance 2 vs Gears of War 2, Little Big Planet vs I can't think of a 360 game even close to that game, etc. The list good games on both consoles is huge by no means can you say 360 really has an edge over PS3 in quality and quantity anymore. In reality it's actually only a handful of good exclusives that 360 has over PS3 and on the horison they are pretty even on the exclusives. So I can't buy that 360 has the best library unless you're talking about sheer quantity because both systems have more than enough awesome games to keep you busy for a very very long time.

The other thing I look at too is that you should consider the fact many people not only have a console but a gaming computer so techniquely many of the 360 titles that aren't on PS3 are actually on or going to games for windows.

It has the best games. I think this is something most people would agree with. With the exception of a few select titles, such as MGS4, the 360 has everything covered.

I was a casual gamer until these great games came out fot the Xbox, now I can't wait to play.

No regrets in buying this console, in fact I highly recommend it.

You're on the XBOX forum so people are going to tell you to get an XBOX. If you go over to the PS3 forum, they will tell you to get a PS3. If you're only a very light gamer you may want to consider just sticking with the Wii, since that's what it's designed for, casual/family gamers.

i was an avid PC gamer who barely played my PS2. I then sold it and bought a 360 and I haven't played PC since. The game selection on the 360 is perfect with the styles of games I like to play! The 360 was the best investment in a console!

I have all 3 consoles and a gaming PC, and if I had to chose one, it would be the 360. It's got the best games, my favorite controller, Netflix (not to be overlooked!), and it offers a good price/performance ratio. Don't worry about the Red Ring... just do some research on how to buy one of the new Jasper chips, and it won't be an issue.

I had a Wii and a 360 for a year and I definitely prefer the 360. XBox live is far superior to the virtual console, I promise. And what's inside the 360 is far more powerful, which is more important now than ever since their prices are comparable.

I'm very happy with my 360 and I'm no fanboy. I had every console plus played PC liberally in the previous generation, but 360 has made me almost forget the others exist. There are other reasons for that -- Wii has been a disappointment for me, my PC sucks and no longer can play the most recent games, and there wasn't anything I wanted to play on PS3 until recently -- but whereas before when I made it a point to play everything and experience the best of all systems, ever since I got my 360 I haven't really missed the others.

I think for me it's the combination of the library of retail games and the library of XBox Live Arcade games. Combine the two and it's a very good library overall. There never seems like there's a lack of stuff to play. Throw in the rest of what XBox Live offers and I've been very happy with the purchase. As far as technical problems, it's an issue and is also a reason why I was scared to buy it at first, but I don't think it should scare you off. Just assume it's going to happen and prepare for it to happen, and then put it in the back of your mind and play.

While I dont think you would be disappointed with either. The 360 seems to be geared towards gaming a bit more than the PS3. If your not a hardcore gamer and your thinking about just getting any ole console...I say get the PS3. I have both (because Im a hardcore gamer), and I'll tell you that the 360 IS all that guys make it out to be.

Some will throw the RRoD out there....well, thats a fact. Think about this....the 360 has had a problem with RRoD's forever and they are STILL outselling the other console. Not so much the Wii. But you get the point.
