No, there is no real difference between the Elite Xbox 360 and the normal Xbox 360. Buy a normal Xbox 360 and save yourself some money.

red, blue & green is the component cable. its HD but not a digital signal like HDMI.

correct, hardware difference are found in the HALO console after batch 734 (some have reported no changes, most have after this batch). For major hardware differences, we'll have to wait and see if the rumoured XBOX 360 Ultimate SKU is released. (this is with the new 60nm die cpu, additional GPU heatsink, built in wi fi/hdmi, HD DVD drive (obviously will change or be excluded).)
