Well, for starters it's not an RPG. I think you just mean they're making it sound like it's the only game in the universe now. I totally agree. All I ever see now is GTA this and GTA that. Friends at school talk about it, it's posted off-topic in blogs and now it's contaminated all forums.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a bad game it's just that everyone seems to be forgetting about other games.

No, sorry, it doesn't have the element of an RPG. Because you don't role-play, you do what you're told (A.K.A. missions). Perhaps you mean 'sandbox' game?FoxtrotZulu
have you played an rpg? you get missions in that too. in gta, you get missions, item, all the same stuff. it may not be what all you people call and R P G... but its similar.

Perhaps you mean 'sandbox' game?FoxtrotZului have heard you can make choices though, for example you can choose to either kill someone your supposed to kill or let them live, in there are consequences for the choices, so this time gta does have a bit of an rpg. anyway i totally agree im pretty sick of hearing about it its takin over everything.

hopefully. well i see it as an rpg in some ways. it has element of one. you cant deny that.
other than a rather non-linear approach to gameplay, multiple endings (2 I think), and a few story choices, there really aren't any other RPG elements.

i can see that. i see it kind of as one. after the first few people said it wasnt at all, i just wanted it to be said that it had elements.
no, there r a lot more rpgs out there. i don't think gta 4 realy counts as a rpg i havn't seen any. iam2green
RPG?
uhmmm.
destinhpark
We're getting away from the fact that GTAIV is officially NOT an RPG. San Andreas was the most similar to an RPG, but IV is not.califone
SIMILAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY FREAKIN CRAP!!!!!

I agree GTA IV is not an RPG. There are RPG's in the game, however.

Now if the game offers leveling and skill manipulation, I would call this a clean sweep RPG. Seeing as how you are a player Playing a Role in a Game this fits most of the points commonly associated with 'proper' RPGs. Now, why are we really arguing an opinion? I personally think Bioshock is close to being an RPG. True the only leveling is upgrading the guns, but it still costs xp (money) to level and you have to make a choice on when and what to upgrade.

i agree there are small similarities to rpg's - missions and you are playing a "role", but an RPG cannot be defined by just the words "role playing game" alone.
the essence of an rpg is in depth character customisation (i.e. shaping the character skills and their personality to what YOU want) and branching mission choices (i.e. choosing good or evil path). stat based combat is also another staple of the RPG (i.e. your characters number and invisible dice rolls having a huge effect).
RPG's seem to, sadly, be on the wane in the world of consoles (except JRPG's but they are a different entity again). even oblivion and mass effect etc are not true RPG's (they are action rpg's where stat based combat is not as prevalent)
i would define GTA games as action adventure personally. i haven't played GTA4 yet but am looking forward to it.
people are making gtaIV sound like the only rpg that there is anymore. its annoying. haven79
GTA IV is an action Adventure Sandbox game, it's in no way an RPG, and I suspect this thread was created to annoy people just like 99.9% of all the rest of the GTA IV topics.
A real RPG would be Oblivion, another one would be Lost Odyssey, another would be Two Worlds (Except its useless.) another would be Mass Effect, another is the upcoming Fallout 3....they are totally different styles of games.

You're taking RPG in it's literal sense 'Role Playing Game.' The problem is that RPG is an established genre which basically means it isn't open to ambiguity, an RPG (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-playing_game_%28video_games%29) is a gaming style that follows a set of protagonists (Or in the case of Lionheart, Baldurs Gate, Fallout, Morrowind, Icewind Dale, Oblivion, Two Worlds and others of their ilk, one user-created protagonist.) through a series of adventures, usually involving one overriding plot element, and involved the self-improvement of all characters that are playable. (Levelling.) Each character usually has a set experience bar, and the game is usually set in a world setting where monsters roam the land outside population centres (Hence, allowing for 'Random Battles') and mainly involve conflicts with end of area 'bosses' that are usually far tougher and more damaging than their smaller bretheren.
That's just a small example, however, in this age of PC incompatibility with the games that have gone before, younger people are not really tuned into what an RPG actually is. The amount of people forgetting the boundaries of the RPG and Adventure genres these days are staggering, especially with this claim that GTA is an RPG- I'm fairly sure GTA plays a wee shade differently to Neverwinter Nights, or Fallout 2 for example.
I think some classic PC RPG games are in dire need of a re-release with XP/Vista compatibility, it'd give people cheap, but extremely long and well written stories for people to play through while waiting for the now slow trickle of good PC titles to be released. These games shouldn't ever be forgotten.

GTA 4 doesn't have any RPG elements. You can't level up and you can't upgrade your character, If anything, San Andreas had more RPG elements than GTA 4
