I don't think that it matters. It was designed to be played both ways so it's just preference.

No, you can't stand it up. One time my friend was playing Dead Rising with his 360 standing up, and the disc almost fell out of the slot and into the hardware inside the Xbox. I don't know about the RROD, but you are likely to get your disc completely screwed up with your system standing up.

There really is no right or wrong answer to this question because there is no substantial evidence to sway one way or another. Personally I prefer to place the system flat to reduce risk of it being knocked over and I place it atop the two foam pads that came in the box to allow airflow underneath the system. It works well for me and besides the typical disk tray issues I have no problems with my system.

I've had my Xbox for over 2 years now and have always stood it up. I got the red ring of course, and so did my friend, who plays his laying down. I don't believe the placement of the system matters with the red ring deal, its a hardware malfunction, if its going to happen, its going to happen.

There's proper ventilation for it to be in both positions. If you really are concerned, elevate it with something so that whatever vents are covered up wont be anymore. I always use mine vertically and haven't had any disc scratching problems. My 360 gets ridiculously hot after playing for a few hours, I recommend taking frequent breaks, like every hour.

Might be somthing to it becasue the the red rings comes from overheating in the "bottom" of the xbox (but who knows :))

It makes no difference, trust me. If it's going to RROD it will anyways.

Wow, you have obviously never worked with disc drives before have you... Almost fell inside the hardware? Come on, that's just ridiculous. The drive is self contained, for the most part. I can see a disc shaking around and getting scratched up, but to be lost inside the abyss of the 360? Nonsense...

This again is a good question that has no right or wrong answer. Some people swear by adding a fan to the back of the system and others believe that it can actually harm the 360. Personally I use an extra fan from Nyko. It has not harmed my system in any fashion. I placed this on my system after getting the RROD after only owning my Xbox for a year. It has been another 2 years now since getting my system fixed, by M$, and Ive had no over heating issues. I can play for hours straight, 8+ in one sittting and my system is nearly as cool as it is when I first boot it up. However, I do have it elevated in order to keep the bottom well ventilated and I believe that a great deal of issues with over heating come from lack of ventilation on the bottom and dust collection on the vents. Here's my tips on preventing the RROD. 1. Elevate your system. 2. Make sure that there is nothing blocking any vents on your system. 3. Clean your system of dust regularily. 4. Be careful placing your system next to other electrical drvices. (Ie. Cable or DishBoxes) These boxes run EXTREMLY hot and thus increase the temp insife your system. 5. And lastely, make sure to not allow your system to sit directly on the floor, especially carpet. This allows for debris, such as dust and dirt, to easily get into the vents and the floor is generally warmer than say a shelf.

My 360s have red ringed laying Horizontal and Vertical. It doesn't matter. Faulty hardware is gonna break no matter where you have it.

Definetly not. It's an on going debate which way is better for the system, but really I don't think it matters at all.

i have heard though that the fans actually melted onto a few 360's. i would have crapped myself if I saw this melted plastic goop all over my 360

i've gotten the RROD twice, and both times were when I had just gotten the console back from lending it to someone. i guess it doesn't like to be moved around?

Having your Xbox 360 in an upright position is better for keeping your Xbox cool because it can release more heat. Having it in a horizontal position may scratch your game disks. I would recommend keeping it upright, on a flat, safe surface so it doesnt tip or fall over.

i don't think so. there is no true way of knowing if there is a way to cause the red rings.
