Live doesn't need installed - its part of the OS. Silver is free, Gold (where you can play against people) is not - you have to subscribe.

You automatically get a Silver account. Just connect to the internet with your 360 (wirelessly or from the Ethernet port) and the system guides you through the rest. Pretty user-friendly. The only problem is that Silvers (like me) can't play online- you need a gold account for that. And that costs a $50 subscription fee a year. If you feel like you want to do that, I recommend buying a pre-paid card from Best Buy, Gamestop or somewhere else appropriate, since paying online with a credit or debit card allows MS to automatically renew your subscription without asking you first. Whatever you choose, have fun.

[QUOTE="anandram"]Dont worry about the 'noob' question...if you dont know, you dont know. Anyway - You need to buy the xboxlive starter kit. Pop the cd into your xbox and your away. In the uk its around £40 for a years subscription. Note that you'll need a credit/debit card to pay for it over the xbox. Alternatively you could buy a 2 day trial? Or aquire one froma friend...but honestly - do the first option as you are then a GOLD member, entitiling you to more options/avenues. Just go to a shop and ask for an xbox live starter kit. Obviously make sure you have broadband and if maybe an ethernet cable. The cable is used to plug in from one end of your router and the other end goes in your xbox. If your router is too far away from your xbox to plug in, then your going to need a wireless adapter that plugs into your xbox. Just get the starter kit for now matey, then post later if you have any other questions. Hope that helps.

You don't need the starter kit for the 360.

yeah it is worth it i have both 360 and ps3 and so far xbl offers way more stuff to do download wise ... havent had one problem with either for online gaming ... im one that thought id never pay for online gaming but i love the xbl + if you cant afford 50$ at a time buy the 7.99 card for 1 mo of gold or the 19.99 for 3-mo.... or look for a kit in stores for 24$ that comes with a new  mic, a free arcade game, 3-mo to xbl, 100 money points, and 10$ rebate on any game  you own... ive done that a couple times when i dont feel like dropping 50 for online gaming..
