I've Got The NXE Update! (Installation And Overview Video) Any Questions?

So far, I'm loving it. Backing up the games to the hard drive is good, and in games like GTA IV, it improves the loads times a bit and there is less pop in, but if I'm being honest, I don't really see the point in using like 8GB of your hard drive for small improvements. It's a plus that the console is quieter when the DVD isn't spinning though.

The layout is nice, and it seems more user friendly than before. I also really like the Mini Dashboard that you get when you press the guide button now, it is pretty sweet.

Also, unfortunatley, I can't use the Avatars at the moment because Microsoft aren't giving people access to them till the 19th. If you try to customise you avatar, it just says that an update is required.

NOTE TO GAMESPOT MODS: This is not illegal, it is perfectly legal to install this. I just can't access XBOX LIVE till the 19th. Just thought I should put this in case the moderators thought that this was illegal and deleted the thread.

Is there a new HD setting for people with 1440x900 resolution? I have a 19" TV plugged in via HDMI and I want to know if 16:!0 resolutions are supported through HDMI and not just VGA and if so, how?PESDan

EDIT: I don't think there is buddy. Only options are Normal and Widescreen, at the moment. Keep in mind that this is just the preview though, so it may be in the update on the 19th.

Also, the firmware is not 8GB.

It is only about 13MB without the avatars.

Well, I can't actually coment on what it's like after checking a message from a friend, because I can't sign on to XBOX LIVE till the 19th, but if you are looking at your achievements or changing your Gamer Picture or something like that and you press the Guide button, it dissapears pretty much straight away. Seems faster now.

Nah, mines is a 1080P 20 Inch Samsung SM2032MW. I use it in my bedroom as a monitor and for gaming in my bedroom. Never had any problems with mine bro.

I think that would work as long as it wasn't too scratched, if you know what I mean.

Cause when you install a game, if you want to run it from your hard drive, you have to put the disk while you are playing it, but obviously, it's just there to prove that you haven't rented the game and installed it or something. So, I'm guessing that the console could still detect it was the right game, even if it was a bit scratched.

Yes, I did. And you could have it too, if you want, as long as you don't care about not having LIVE till the 19th.

Just do a search for NXE Update USB Drive on Google and you should find it.

It is not illegal. You just have to put it on a USB Pen Drive or something and plug it into your XBOX 360.

Microsoft have confirmed that you can do this and you won't get banned or anything, but you will not have access to LIVE till the official release on the 19th.

I loved the blades and was always a big fan of them, but I do really like the new NXE.

I'm going to make a decision on whether they are better once I have used the Avatars and stuff.

Just to add a few things:

I was lucky enough to get in the NXE preview program, and since Major Nelson has confirmed we are allowed to blog about it, let me shed light on a few things:

Initial update is around 7MB, but the full update with avatars is 128MB which will come on the 19th.

Install to HDD works very well, some games you'll notice have sharper graphics (tried fable 2 and the improvements are very significant), less lag in menus (you know how it lags when you spin the character in the clothing options?). Less texture pop-in.

Didn't notice loading time difference, but what's important is, your console's DVD drive is spared from wear and tear, there's significantly less heat on the console itself. By design, the DVD drive sits right on top of the GPU, and i seriously suspect the heat from the DVD drive contributes much to overheating/3RL issues, so this may mean lesser chances of overheating issues and 3RL in general.

On privacy settings there is now an option to restrict hearing only and receiving messages from your friends list. Options are: Everyone, Friends only, or blocked.

This bodes well to protect us from the brainless oline gamers who know nothing but racist remarks and annoying behavior.

YES, there is support now for 1440x900, and also 1680x1050 up to 1080p on VGA. However, there is letterboxing, as most games coded for 16:9 and not 16:10 aspect ration. The letterboxing is to ensure there's no bad stretching.

Any other questions, i might be able to answer.

And oh, yeah, You can now delete Games in your games history that have 0 gamerscore, and only those with 0 gamerscore.

Answers to Question 1: The feed back i've heard so far from other previewers is that right now, with the preview, the NXE treats a multi disk game as 1 game per disk, which means you need to swap. He has filed a report or suggestion regarding the matter and we're hoping it can be fixed in time for launch date.

Q2: There is now an option for this: When you insert a game in the drive you can either have it auto-play, or stay on the dashboard. I choose it to stay in the dashboard. It then shows you a screenshot of the game in the drive. When you press the Y button, the game details pop out, and you will get the option to Install to HDD, or play the game from disc.

The 1440x900 resolution should be available on HDMI as well, but will need to check since i don't use the HDMI feature.

Be patient and wait for the update. While i don't think you would be banned, there has been a "you have been warned" comment by Major Nelson about using the leaked update. The NXE preview we have isn't even complete, from what i heard. And there are some bugs, like a little freezing here and there.

For those with wireless connected xbox 360s, MS recommends you let it update using a wired connection, at least until the update is fully applied.
