I just got my new 32" HDTV and now I need something to watch DVDs on. I'm going to be getting a 360 but I'm wondering if the DVD player is good or should I get a separate one. My old DVD player looks like garbage on the new TV.

It's better than nothing, but you should really get a new one.

It won't give out a good picture? It's blurry? What's wrong with it?

The 360's DVD player is fine. What your old player probably doesn't do is upscale. The 360 will upscale your DVD's to 1080p as long as you're using HDMI or VGA. If you're using Component you'll get 1080i. I have both the 360 and PS3 and find it hard to tell the difference between the two, so you'll be fine with the 360. When you get it though, you just need to make sure you set it up properly. Hit the HDTV switch on the cable if it's component/ In the system settings make sure you have the output set to your tv's resolution.

If you want the HD content, just dl from the marketplace/netflix. Though, DVDs I believe are 480p so it wont be a huge of a jump with component cables. Make sure you set the 360 to the closest resolution of your TV.

Yeah the TV is 1080p. Are the Netflix "watch instantly" movies in 720 at least?

I just looked into this. So it looks like the Netflix streams are in HD and the future Zune stuff will be in 1080p. So really -- there may not even be a need to EVER get a Blu Ray player. Go Xbox! Now one last question, for Xbox -- can I just use any cheap old 5 dollar HDMI cables to get that good image?

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the cable. Quality differs.

The dvd player is as good as a basic one. I suggest getting a blue ray player if you can though.

Yes. Any HDMI cable is good unless your looking at a long throw. That's the only case a more expensive cable "may" be needed. Otherwise, a good ole cheapo is fine.

So I'm assuming I should not bother with the "official" xbox cables.

if you like pirated movies like i do, the 360 is perfect because through a simple update it can play divx files so I can just hook up my external hardrives to the usb port and play them through there.

I think DVD looks fine. Playing DVDs off a 360 using component or HDMI cables looks way better than playing DVDs on AV cables. I think playing DVDs off the 360 using HDMI/component cables is about like playing em' in a progressive scan DVD player, but don't hold to it, I'm not exactly an expert. For the best picture quality you can possibly get though you'd have to get a Blue-ray player. In case your wondering a Blu-player does not make DVDs look better. A DVD can only go up to 480p. So you'd have to buy Blu-Ray movies. Personally I don't find it worth it since Blu-Ray movies are more expensive and I'm fine with DVDs. But if you have your heart set on Blu-ray then you may benefit from getting a PS3. The 360 and PS3 are both great system and they're practically interchangable although I'm sure many on this forum would agree with me when I said the 360 edges the PS3 out when it comes to gaming. Still, this really comes down to how much you want your movies to be in HD. Like the others said, the 360 does have HD video downloads but I'm pretty you can't purchase most movies, just rent them. And even if you could HD videos take up ALOT of space.

I'm pretty sure both the 360 and PS3 only come with AV cables. But I think the 360 Elite model comes with either HDMI or Component cables. But don't quote me on that, I'm not entirely certain.
