Some people always disagree with the following advice, but I still think it's sound.

Do not choose these as major skills:

-hand to hand (it's uselessly pathetic)

-security (once you get the skeleton key there's no point)

-restoration (it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to level up this skill properly, so don't try)

-merchantile (money isn't an issue in this game so don't worry about that)

-speechcraft (it's basically useless, just use a charm spell or fiddle with the personality mini-game if you really need to)

Oh, and make a custom class, not one of the pre-made ones. You'll make a character that's better suited to your playing style that way and you won't be stuck with any skills that you won't ever use.

After you've been playing for a few hours, find a small village, do all the available sidequests, then kill every single NPC you can find. Kill the animals. Steal everything that isn't nailed down. Burn the village and laugh nefariously. Ok, you can't do that last part, but follow the rest of my advice. It can be very fun being very bad in Oblivion.

P.S. If you're patient enough, do the Thieve's Guild questline first. Something you get at the end will make things much easier for you.

oh, and wait off on the Dark Brotherhood.  All the rewards are levelled, so if you do it really early then the rewards suck, but if you start the guild last (when you're level 25 at least) the rewards will be much better and actually worth it.

Avoid premature leveling if you want to build an uber character. What I mean by that is, try and get three +5 stat boosts with every level gained. You do this by avoiding raising your major skills (which raise your level) until you've boosted enough minor skills to get three +5 stat increases. Each ten points of skill boosts that is governed by a major stat (strength for example) gets you a +5 at level time. So let's say that Heavy Armor is a major skill for you, but Alteration and Illusion are minor skills. Cast Alteration and Illusion spells repeatedly until you gain ten levels in each (having a easy spell to cast that doesn't cost a lot of MP and goes away quickly helps this) and THEN level up your Heavy Armor 10 points. By doing this, you'll be able to get +5 to Endurance, +5 to Personality and +5 to Willpower all with one level up. Now if you're more concerned with just having a lot of fun and doing quests, then join guilds! The main storyline quests are okay, but to me the funnest parts were the side quests.

At first, just wing it. Play around a little to see what type of character you like, be it a warrior, mage, thief, battlemage, etc. Once you find a good one that suits you, get used to how to game works (such as the level scaling). After that, you can get into more advanced ways to play, like getting all +5 mutlipliers.

I wanted help as far as picking a character, what to do first, and other things, not included in the gamespot game guide.

In doing the main quest:

You can gain like 5 levels (that's exagerated) if you take your time and kill everyone in the gate. But after a while it gets annoying to do kinda the same thing. One fun thing to do is to just tank through the gates. Running through the gate and having everyone chasing you can be quite fun. If you don't fee like being cheap just remember this:

Resting for 1 hour is FAR more beneficial then just standing around waiting for you health to regenerate. if you rest for an hour your health, enduarnce, and mana will completely regenerate.

Also if you are an alchemist (most people aren't but it's a good way to get money fast) take every bit of food that you can find. DONT make a 4 ingredient potion, it doesn't do any good even when you're an expert/master (whichever is higher) they take the crap load of restore fatigue potions taht you just made and sell them for money. it really helps if you're trying to save up for a specific item.

Also this is entertaining, if you're a thief and an alchemist and you have good sneak, steal stuff from store owners while they are watching you make a potion out of those goods (cause you can't sell stolen stuff to them) and then sell them the potion. You can't sell stolen goods to normal shopkeepers but once you've taken a stolen apple mashed it up and mixed it with a pumpkin there is no way for them to know it was stolen...

Restoration is a really good major skill. If you are like me and go on large dungeon raids and adventures in the wilderness, you should always keep a restoration skill that can heal you. Since I use the healing spell so many times my restoration skill goes up ALL the time. It helps me level up A lot!.

take every key you find :) It may come in useful sometime. As a matter of course on quests I take the keys of those involved ...

It's saved me a fair bit of time in many quests.

I found the stealth skill to be very useful, that sneak attack coupled with a high damage weapon can take out most enemies with one shot, even on higher levels. I wish I made Bow a major skill though so I could stealth kill from a far.

Pick one type of weapon and stick with it

The Arena, Fighters Guild, and Mages Guild are good places to start getting quests

0ne hour "rests" are great for a quick mana recharge and heal

Pick major skills that are "controlable" so you won't level too quickly (ie: not ,stealth, armorer, athletics etc)

Enchanting a weapon with "absorb health" will go a long way to helping you win those tough fights

Do the daedric shrine quests to get some kick ass stuff

Enjoy one of the best games to date

I have a tendancy in RPG's to over-level my characters.  And in Oblivion I especially didn't want to let any of those juicy +5 levels get away from me, so I uh.. kinda just sat around the place you start the game in, and didn't do any of the main quest.  Do fort runs, especially the ones with bandits, since they respawn, do them every level to make sure you have the tip-top gear (Bandit/Marauder Warlords were dropping me all the latest gear I needed at my level to be in tip-top shape.)  If you get caught by a troll or an ogre at a transition level (before you've met baddies to drop you current gear) life can be rough.  Especially once you start getting grizzly bears and mountain lions after you.  I endured though!  Heh..

For your main skills, pick skills you have to INTENTIONALLY use, like spells, or a weapon type you're actually not very keen on.  That way, you can build up your +5 levels by gaining 10 points in a skill you cant control (Athletics) just by running around or swimming, or Acrobatics by jumping, and once that's done, just switch to your un-used major skill to level.  I personally picked mostly spells and weapons for my major skills.  Mercantilism is also a bad major skill, you dont want to be leveling up every time you try to sell something, right?  Oh well, just my thoughts.  Never got too far into the story, but I sure levled up a bit, before my 360 got a taste for Oblivion discs.

What is the point of this? Keeping the enemies at equal level less powerfull than you? I have not done this advice and I have two major stats maxed out already at level 18. Can you see benefits of going beyond 100 in each stat?

The game scales enemies based on your level, not your stats. A tenth level character who has been getting +5 stat boosts with each level will be far more powerful than a tenth level character who has been getting +2s and +3s. Since the enemies don't care if you're a beefed up 10th level character or a wimpy 10th level character, the game gets a lot easier if you make the most of your leveling opportunities. You don't really have to do this to beat the game or the sidequests, or to enjoy the game. It is just for those who want to make things a bit easier on themselves or really build up an uber powerful character. Another benefit is that it makes your character way more flexible. Having 100 in each stat really lets you pick and choose how you want to play on any given day. Want to be a thiefy type? Go for it. Are you in an impatient mood and just want to plow through everything you find tank style? Go ahead. This method is purely optional of course, but it isn't without its benefits.

Depending on your play Style (Stealth) (Melee Fighter) (Mage/Caster) you'll have different skills to specialize in, BUT the most important thing to remember is that you DONT want to pick skills you will use often (like magic spells) as your primary skills, because leveling those skills up levels you up...if you have skills udont use often you can max out the skills that mater before you level up thus making you stronger and more balanced. Other then that you cant do much wrong, just enjoy the game...its an awsome game.

I would first do the main questline up until after you free Kvatch, then join a guild, or two, or three.  These are built to help level up your character.  After that, I would recommend doing several hundred side quests, it is really easy to get past level 20-25 on side quests alone.  I would also recommend downloading the add-ons as those can offer some helpful upgrades and lairs.

some good skills to pick are:

Light armor/heavy armor(pick the one you are going to use most. pick one of them)

Marksmen(once you get it to journeyman rank, you can zoom in on enemys by holding LT when an arrow is drawn.)

Blade/Blunt(once again pick the one you'll use most. pick one of them.)

Sneak (helps with the dark brotherhood and the thieves guild)

Armorer(once at journeyman rank you can repair magical equipment)

Consider the mage for your birthsign. the extra magicka helps for higher ranked spells. and if your a fighter, once you reach higher levels, you'll wanna start learning more about spells. thats what to me and a lot of my friends.

the best race for a thief is the wood elf. for a mage its the high elf or the breton, and a fighter is the redguard, nord, or orc.

start of with the arena. once you beat it, its a great way to earn money. also do the mages guild. at least until you have access to the arcane university. this will allow you to make spells and enchant equipment.

one good tip: boost your illusion skill up to 50, this way you'll be able to cast chameleon. enchant 5 pieces of armor or jewelery with chameleon so you have 100% chameleon. this will allow you to sneak up on any one, steal from any one, and basicly defeat anyone in a battle 'cause they cant see or sense you. it helps with the thieves guild and the dark brotherhood.

This is very good advice. But Secuity is very easy to level up. So It'd pick it as a major skill if you want to get your main character level up.
