What kind of games do you think the X360 is lacking?

They've got shooters down, obviously.
....as well as racers of all kinds -- except kart racing, I guess.

They've done a lot with RPGs over the last few years, with Fable, KOTOR, and look to be doing a lot more, with Blue Dragon and Mass Effect.

Since they have a pretty big head start with hardware sales, they are also getting some quirky 3rd party stuff and casual games.

And they're getting a hold on strategy, with C&C3 and the announced Halo Wars.

I think the one area where the XBOX really lacks is in platformers. There is no Mario or Jax equivalent. Tomb Raider Legends was good, but it was early in the system's life, and there looks to be no continuation of the series there. They tried an original with Blinx, but I think that they really need to give playformers another shot -- perhaps put RARE on it.

What do you think that MS lacks in terms of franchise genres that they have access to?

I think that their heavy focus on shooters, including a controller designed for them, would be enough, but more RPGs would probably increase the system's appeal. Not that I play any except Diablo 2, but I'm sure more JRGPs than Blue Dragon would get them some Sony nerds who don't want a PS3. As for platformers, I feel that it is a worn-out, dying genre. Mario Galaxy will probably be its last hurrah, and only because it is innovative. The only others that I like are Ratchet and Clank, and those have enough shooting elements to differentiate them from real platformers.

I also forgot to add that I think they MS lacks a really solid adventure franchise.

And I don't think platformers are dead at all. Yoshi's Island and New Super Mario Bros were both enjoyable on DS, as was Tomb Raider Legends.

And PS3 is releasing Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, which looks like it has a lot of platforming stuff.

With the great graphics and lighting and all that, the 360 would be excellent for creepy, atmospheric horror/action/adventure games.  Condemned and FEAR were just the tip of the iceberg.  The next Silent Hill will be cool.  A new Fatal Frame is probably inevitable, but the horror genre's wide open, so hopefully there will be some truly new and original horror games, not just sequels. Though I could even go for another installation of Doom or The Suffering. Things look so good on new-gen consoles that they should be able to ramp up the scare factor on anything that was remotely creepy before (i.e., Breakdown, Thief: Deadly Shadows, etc.). The amount of shooters is not surprising though.  Like the other guy suggested, the 360's controller is so good for shooters.

The thing about it is that M$ doesen't have to innovate, enough people like Gears and Halo so that if the 360 only was able to play those 2 games they'd still put up a decent fight for the #1 spot, you must remember why M$ joined the console war in the first place... they started noticing how much gamers spend, realized the potential to insert themselves in that many more households and let's face the facts - if anybody knows how to squeeze the loose change out of you pockets it's M$. But for what it's worth although I don't count on ever seeing this day, I'd like to see more party games (and I don't necessarily mean I want them to rip off Mario Party). One time since I've owned the console has any of my guests suggest "hey, let's all play some ___ on the 360", it's always either PS/Nintendo. I'm sure some of you will say hey, me an' my pals always play blah blah blah together but I ask do you own all three? The one time I have inserted a second controller into the 360 was for my bro to sesh some gears splitscreen online- I didn't even know where to plug the second controller in LOL. For my two cents, I agree XBL is a pretty good setup for online play (aside from M$ charging us without any dedicated servers, what a ripoff as well as almost ruining some game sesions depending on the host) but IMO M$ should look at the other two and figure out why this is the case.

Any argumental software suggestions don't include four player splitscreen shooters or sports- too easy. Otherwise- agree or disagree?

Though the focus probably has been on shooters for the Xbox and 360, I think a good look at the Xbox's catalog will show that they had  a bit of everything to offer. Each of the 3 big systems have a "niche" or specialty, but they each cover a lot of ground. Nintendo's got the party games and family-oriented games, Microsoft has the shooters (and a growing list of RPGs) and Sony has, well, all the rest.  Great titles from all three.  I do remember Nintendo being the earliest to bring the fun home, so to speak, with good multiplayer like Golden Eye and Starfox for the 64.  I think the 360 should stay the course, and by that I mean there will be good games from genres they don't do as often. I don't think platforming is necessarily dead, but obviously, since it is an older genre, they have to try harder to make it interesting.  I really liked Psychonauts.  And MMORPGs would be a good way to take advantage of the 360's resources. What I'm waiting for most is some good horror games, though.
