WEP keys are passwords for routers. You won't be able to connect to those. What about your own router? Not wireless?

i have a D-Link router, and have an ethernet cord from that; it seems to work fine the majority of the time

Like kingdmudrfrfan said, you really shouldn't be stealing other people's bandwidth. First off, it's completely unreliable because you never know when someone will shut off their router or put up a password and lock you out. Also, you never know when your connection will give out, like it has already. Get a wireless router for your OWN connection and you'll never have a problem again.
