[QUOTE="cpaschal"] If you look at it, the achievements brought to you by Progressive Insurance, the achievements are for your first big crash and being a safe driver. So I think its kinda clever and sly marketing and doesn't bother me at all.
As for the PGR3 achievements someone mentioned, yes, I guess that is advertising, except its not going to make me go buy a real Ferrari or Lambo. It just about collecting everything in game. Would it be better if it said..."Collect all Italian made cars with a horse in the logo"???
Or is that advertising Italy, now?
And the Fight Night 3 achievements...that game is loaded with advertising from top to bottom, much like real boxing is. So to a point, it makes the game more realistic. The achievements are for winning the fight sponsored by that company. yes, this is obvious marketing, but in some ways makes the game more real. The advertising doesn't make me want to buy a Dodge or watch ESPN more than I already do.
BTW...I think achievements are great. Not for bragging rights, but in a way, kinda. The gamerscore means jack to me...but when I see that someone has all the achievements for a game, I pretty much know what kind of gamer they are and how good they are.

I have to agree except for the Fight Night Round 3 game. That game has a few advertisements that are lame. For instance, the 2006 Dodge car advertisement and even the Burger King advertisement. Those did not even existin the "Boxing era".
I agree to an extent. The Burger King thing is over the top, with the "King" coming out with you, blah blah blah. But the Dodge is just a sponsor of the fight, and most boxing matches/events have sponsors IRL.
I think MS has rewards in mind for achievements, but when they realized people were using other "methods" to obtain them, they knew they couldnt reward that kind of behavior.
And jchaff, yeah, I see your point. It is kinda pathetic, but I can halfway see the Progressive one. In a way it is kinda funny. Would be better if it was Geico though. LOL.
